Share selected images on a projector as writing prompts or to open a "what is art" discussion. You could also use the images simply as examples of montages before a hands-on project, though this approach misses the clickable depths of each image. Teachers should be aware that this site does not limit image content, so some nudity may occasionally appear in the images. Check you art program's guidleines for such images and/or maintain teacher control over which ones are shown in class, if this will be a problem in your shcool. You must be registered and logged in to add items to your favorites.

Send your students on a tour, looking for evidence to support a poitn of view about tsarist Russia. Or try a scavenger hunt where students find answers to specific questions. Even simpler, use a projector to give a "tour" as the opening activity of your unit, then have students revisit the site in individual computers later on in the unit for specific research.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

In the Classroom
Take some time to poke around to find the gem that will spice up your art classroom. This is a great site to use in the elementary classroom, and in art electives classes in middle grades and high school. Be sure to share it with other teachers on your campus and put a link to this tool on your class website for students to use at home. Enhance learning by using a visual blogging tool such as Telegra.ph, reviewed here. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. Save the URL for your blog! This blog creator requires no registration. The students can blog about their work and even create an online portfolio. Host an art show at your school for families and the communities to showcase the students' creativity. Your students can describe their work as visitors explore the gallery. In a language arts class have students brainstorm to analyze the character(s), setting, and situation of a painting and create an original story. Explore this site before a trip to an art museum.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

Cover Art: The Time Magazine Collection - National Portrait Gallery
Grades
9 to 12tag(s): famous people (20), news (227)
In the Classroom
This site would be useful in a Art History or US government class studying the impact of the media on politics. Have students explore the site on the interactive whiteboard, allowing them to be hands on with the material - avoid being the Vanna White of the board! As students are navigating the site, focus their attention on how many presidents and political figures are featured - as evidenced on the link entitled "Most Featured Person." This could lead into a great discussion of how exposure can affect politicians, as well as the difference between good and bad press.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

Bound for Glory: America in Color - Library of Congress
Grades
8 to 12tag(s): 1930s (20), 1940s (14), great depression (30), images (260), photography (118)
In the Classroom
It's interesting how viewing the images in color makes the viewer feel as though the Great Depression was something far more recent - perhaps due to the dated feeling of black and white images. In a discussion of the Great Depression, spend some time comparing these images and the traditional black and white images on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Ask students about the differences and if one is more revealing or not. This can also lead into a discussion on the reliability of primary sources and the effects of seeing something rather than reading it.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member
