tag(s): dna (43), genetics (80)

In the Classroom

Use this site to help students review a unit on genetics. There are plenty of links that students can access reviewing a number of subjects within genetics. Save the site on your class wiki or web page to allow students to access it both in and out of the classroom. The "tour the basics" link would also be great at the beginning of a unit on genetics to assess what knowledge the students already have, and bring them all up to speed. Any science teacher should save this site and use it frequently in their class!

These resources from the National Human Genome Research Institute offer a series of modules for secondary students that deal with genetics, genome sequencing, and the ethical implications of genetic research and development. Find links to Journals, Resources, and Databases. This material assumes some level of prior experience on the part of both teacher and student. The site also provides a number of links to additional web resources. This is challenging content for faculty and students willing to make the effort. Students will find the glossary, found here, helpful.

In the Classroom

Looking at the map of the all the human chromosomes (GeneMap99) is an interesting way to introduce genetics and tie research into genetic studies in the classroom. Students can investigate the traits of students in the classroom and determine the different variations. Provide a link to this site to determine the chromosome and location on the chromosome for the trait. Find data about the frequency of the different variations in different populations around the world. Use the trait to complete genetic crosses. Do research and create an informational brochure, blog post, website page, or presentation on the findings. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. This blog creator requires no registration!

The unit has two parts: the first details conservation through the rationales of various historical figures, and the second outlines the case study of Hetch Hetchy. The format of the second part includes a mock hearing where students present their researched ideas. In the course of the unit, students will also compare historical ideas of conservation with current ones.

Have cooperative learning groups create online books using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Have groups tell the "acid" rain, explaining where and how it happens most. Great for a pre-discussion activity about the efforts to stop acid rain.
