This math site is filled with interactive demonstrations that address a huge array of math concepts - from the most basic early elementary skills to algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Select a topic or age group and then browse through the offerings. "Math for Everyone," an especially useful link for older students, offers authentic math problems related to figuring out tips, simple and compound interest, and the cost of electricity. Beware of the "Ask an Expert" feature - a fee is involved in receiving a solution, but past questions and answers can be viewed free of charge.

Despite its awkward subtitles, this site offers concise, amply illustrated presentations on algebra, trigonometry, and other branches of mathematics. Teachers may find this site useful when they need a perspective that's different from their usual text. Students can use the information in the same manner, as another explanation when they're stumped by the textbook, although there's no real search feature. Well worth a look.

Looking for mathematics problems that go beyond routine practice? Maths Challenge offers a large collection of mathematical puzzles, problems, and supporting reference material designed to encourage logical thinking, problem solving, and mathematical reasoning. The searchable problem archive contains hundreds of challenges organized by four difficulty levels, ranging from problems that require mainly logical thinking and experimentation to advanced challenges requiring a strong command of school mathematics and proof. Problems cover areas such as number concepts, geometry, algebra, probability, sequences, and mathematical proofs, and many include worked solutions and extension questions. The site also provides mathematics FAQ and reference pages on topics such as prime numbers, Fibonacci numbers, circle theorems, trigonometry, constructions, and cryptography.

In the Classroom

Have students work individually on a one-star problem as a warm-up or enrichment challenge, then write or sketch the steps they used to reach a solution. Invite students to choose a problem involving number patterns, geometry, or algebra and create a visual explanation using Google Drawings, reviewed here. Ask pairs to solve the same problem using different strategies and compare their approaches, discussing which method is most efficient and why.
