This website, created by the American Academy of Pediatrics, provides a basic list of items for parents to think about at the start of the school year. Some are obvious (i.e. what day does school begin), but many are deeper thoughts to ponder.
In the Classroom
You may want to post this link on your class website during the summer months so new students (and parents) can take a look at the checklist over the summer break. This national directory lets users access information about individual public or independent schools, including enrollment information, community profiles, and other data.
In the Classroom
Use this website as a way to wake your students up with a brain teaser at the beginning of every class. Before students come in, access the website on an interactive whiteboard or projector and click on "Grab Bag." Click on "Math Teaser," and leave the site up as students are coming in to the room. Once class starts and students have had a chance to read it, ask for answers and use the question as a way to get discussion rolling. The site only posts one teaser a month, but there is an archive with a wealth of teasers that will allow this application far more than once a month!Bilingual Health Information

Share this site with your school's administration and PTSA to find out about mentoring groups in your community. If you teach middle and high school students, share the topics on the resources page and ask them what other topics could be included. The most useful resource on this site would be the list of resources that offer help to someone suffering from suicidal thoughts. Share the resources with students during a health class on the interactive whiteboard or projector.
