The PBS Frontline series has examined the SAT and how different schools use it to inform admissions decisions about their applicants. While not a definitive study, the site presents some of the criticisms leveled against the test and shows that the SAT is not the only criterion schools use in making their decisions. Worth a look if you work with college-bound students.

MyPlan.com's site is a great tool for students heading into college. Just click on a college major, and you can learn about possible careers that could be available to you after college. Easy to use and offers practical advice for those deciding on what to do after high school.
In the Classroom
Counselors and career advisors alike will appreciate the information offered by this site. Post the site on the school web page, and refer it to students who are beginning their search for what to do after high school. Some of the information is geared towards postgraduate students, but the career counseling is still helpful to those who want to look for jobs rather than pursue higher education. The navigation could be easier, but users can compare the extent to which each state's schools prepare students for college, costs in different states, etc.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is an engaging science resource from the University of Wisconsin-Madison that introduces students to one of the world's most unique astronomy experiments. Located deep beneath the Antarctic ice at the South Pole, IceCube detects tiny particles called neutrinos, helping scientists study distant stars, black holes, supernovas, and other cosmic events. The site features news articles, videos, photographs, interactive explanations, and educational materials that help students explore particle physics, astronomy, Earth science, and scientific research. Teachers can use the website to introduce scientific inquiry, careers in STEM, Antarctic exploration, and the ways scientists use technology to investigate the mysteries of the universe.

In the Classroom
After learning about the IceCube Observatory, have students work in teams to design and sketch their own particle detector. Students should explain how their detector would collect data and what scientific questions it could help answer. Students can investigate the location of IceCube in Antarctica and create a map using Google My Maps, reviewed hereshowing the observatory, the South Pole, and other Antarctic research stations. They can add facts about climate, geography, and scientific research conducted there. Older students can examine IceCube data visualizations and graphs from the website. Get involved in real-world water-conservation issues, investigate STEM careers in science and engineering, and meet scientists and engineers in those disciplines. Also, watch Youth in Action videos where young people work for positive change. Expeditions are designed to conserve water, with titles such as Water by Design, Shell Shocked, Beyond the Dead Zone, Into the Dead Zone, and Plastic Seas. Also, find many Educator Resources and filter them by grade level, Program (Food, Toxins, Energy, Marine Debris, and several others), and media type (Videos, Lesson Plans, Worksheets, etc.). EarthEcho was founded by Philippe and Alexandra Cousteau, grandchildren of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, in honor of their father, Philippe Cousteau, Sr. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom
Show students how to combat the global water crisis, starting with their communities. Immerse students in hands-on, inquiry projects with these expeditions, or use the lesson plans and videos. Introduce them on an interactive whiteboard or projector and select a class project to complete. List the choices on Dotstorming, reviewed here, for students to comment and vote. Once students have launched into the expedition or lesson plan, ask them to keep a journal about what they are learning using Penzu, reviewed here, with Penzu, you can add images or your own artwork as illustrations. Be sure to bookmark these expeditions and lesson units for future use.
