The National Snow and Ice Data Center offers this primer on glaciers and their characteristics. While the site is almost entirely static text and images, there's a wealth of content here, and even more is available from the many links to other scientific sources. This would be a great starting point for a student research project, or for a teacher building a unit on glaciers or mountain and polar climates.

Use Timeline Infographic Templates by Canva, reviewed here to create a timeline for the formation of glaciers. Compare and contrast ice caps and icefields using Interactive 2 Circle Venn Diagram by Read Write Think, reviewed here.

The text includes well-illustrated descriptions of various tiger subspecies and the countries in which they live. Other areas of the site are still "under construction." This one could be used at a variety of grade levels. This is a great site to learn about tigers and their plight despite the fact that the video clips say "coming soon."

As with anything involving water, lots of the good stuff in this site lies beneath the surface. Developed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the site introduces the interplay of science, public policy, and resource management that go into managing water resources. These take the form of a collection of lessons and related background information that ask students to examine scientific facts and develop management strategies for water resources.

tag(s): environment (244), resources (80), water (101)

In the Classroom

Both the approach and the lesson topics are attractive, and this one could be a winner for thoughtful secondary science faculties.

Photography can be both an art form and a form of scientific inquiry. Photos of People and Cultures can promote human understanding better than any written words. This site from National Geographic can serve both ends if used properly. Art teachers "focus" on tips and techniques and photography advice areas, while science/social studies teachers will easily locate a wide range of plant, animal, culture, and geography images. As always, the photos themselves are exquisite. You will need to sign up for the free newsletter (with email) to view the photos.

tag(s): animals (277), photography (126)

In the Classroom

Share a photo of the day as an activator at the start of a lesson on your projector or interactive whiteboard (IWB). Allow a student of the day to select his/her photo of the day as a class inspiration. Share a photo as a visual writing prompt. Use tools on your IWB to discover and reveal design elements in the photos in art class. Use selected collections on laptops with student partners (galleries) to provide a visual experience of a location or culture you are studying, engage students and enhance learning by asking students to use Padlet, to record their observations for visual evidence of some of the major concepts you have discussed in class.
