This very well planned site helps you and your students understand and explore astronomy. It explains astronomy in everyday language. It contains a calendar of celestial events. There are also tips for everyone. There is also software and astronomy hardware for sale. The site includes pictures of many astronomic events, lists of astronomy clubs, planetariums, science museums, and observatory locations from all around the world. You can find your hometown facility and print it out in minutes!

tag(s): stars (78)

In the Classroom

Probably the coolest part of this website is entitled "observing," which provides helpful calendars, explanations and images of solar events that are happening soon locally. Refer to this site for upcoming solar phenomena, and encourage students to go out and observe on their own. If there are events in the area, assign students to observe and create a report based on what they saw! If students are able to gather images of the event, we recommend a tool like PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. This site allows users to narrate a picture, and could provide some cool presentations in class.

There is a lot to explore here. You could start with the home page and the many articles listed there. Have small groups divide up the articles to read and investigate. Then have students with the same article meet together to become the expert on that topic (in cooperative learning, this is known as Jigsaw). Have each student in the Jigsaw group create an Awesome ScreenShot, where they can make digital notes with lines, text, or shapes. Once they form back into their original small group, they can report what they learned to the other group members.

The Rock Cycle Gizmo from ExploreLearning is an interactive online simulation that enables students to explore how rocks change form through various Earth processes, including heat, pressure, cooling, and erosion. This digital tool helps reinforce concepts related to igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks through hands-on manipulation, visuals, and guided questions. It includes a student exploration guide, vocabulary sheet, and teacher lesson materials to support instruction. While ExploreLearning is a subscription-based platform, a free trial version of this Gizmo is available.

Have students begin with a rock cycle prediction chart. Before launching the Gizmo, have students brainstorm and chart how they think each type of rock (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic) forms and transforms. After interacting with the simulation, they can revisit their chart and make corrections based on what they learned. Guide students through the Gizmo Student Exploration Sheet (available on the site), which walks them through the simulation's hands-on use. As they manipulate variables such as heat, pressure, weathering, and erosion, students can answer questions and track how one rock type transforms into another. Assign students to complete a "Day in the Life of a Rock" writing assignment, where they write a short story from the perspective of a rock moving through the rock cycle. They can complete this book digitally using Book Creator reviewed here or a template on Google Slides reviewed here.

Learn about the life and careers of many famous scientists by viewing intriguing videos. Find out about scientists such as Richard Feynman, Rosalind Franklin, and Gregor Mendel through interviews with scientists in their field today. Don't let the cartoon figures fool you: these videos are not "juvenile." The scientists included may not be household names to everyone, but the videos make their work accessible and interesting. At the time of this review, there were over a dozen scientists included, and more were being added regularly. Note that the actual videos are hosted on YouTube so may not be accessible in some schools.

Use as a resource for finding more information about a variety of different scientists told from a scientist's perspective. Share the videos on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Consider having students create their own report about the importance of research and not just the biographical information about a scientist.
