Add this Kenn Nesbitt poetry site to your resource of kid-friendly poetry. This site is a treasure with podcasts, a rhyming dictionary, games, videos, tips and lessons for kid to write poetry. Browse through dozens of examples and choose a few to illustrate rhyme scheme, meter, or alliteration. These are not literary masterpieces, but they will engage your most resistant students, and perhaps inspire some original poetry. If your school blocks YouTube, the videos won't be viewable.
In the Classroom
Ask your students to choose a favorite poem from this site and use it as a model for their own poem. Have them pay attention to the rhythm and rhyme of the poem they like. In the Classroom
Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on folk tales and short stories. This would be a great way to encourage ELLs and lower-achieving readers to become interested in reading. Have students watch the stories on classroom computers, creating a timeline of the story and establishing the chain of events. This is a great way to get students thinking about timelines and to help those who are aided by the site's visual elements. Make sure to include headphones so that students won't disturb others.

The LIFE Picture Collection offers a vast digital archive of iconic photographs from LIFE magazine, featuring the work of some of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. The collection documents major moments in U.S. history, politics, social movements, arts, and popular culture through powerful, primary-source images. Teachers can project selected photos to introduce historical events, spark class discussion, inspire student photographers, or serve as visual prompts for narrative, descriptive, or analytical writing. The site is searchable and easy to navigate, allowing users to browse by topic, era, or photographer. While images can be viewed freely online for educational exploration, a fee is required to license or download high-resolution images.

Click on the Learning Hub and select a level (elementary, middle school, or high school) to explore age-appropriate challenges across content areas. Many of the activities on this site are free, but registration and a fee are required to access some of the special features.
In the Classroom
Use the free quizzes to help students review OR as pre-diagnositc quizzes to determine what students already know about the topic. This is a great way to assess which areas need strengthening and which areas students need less help in. OK - this one's just for fun. These tongue-in-cheek synopses of literary pearls are hilarious and BRIEF! Few authors escape the treatment; nearly every writer from Shakespeare to Steinbeck is represented on these pages. Some synopses are better than others - check out their version of A Tale of Two Cities - but all are quite clever! Use to generate some lively pre or post-reading discussion in class, or kick off a lesson on satire with several choice examples. Take a virtual tour of Dove Cottage, Wordsworth's home in the charming hamlet of Town End, to gain insight into his inspiration and influences. A discussion of themes found in Wordsworth's poetry and an introduction to the lives and works of his contemporaries are also provided.

Make the Bard more approachable for younger students with this clever, interactive resource. Kids of all ages can enjoy delving into the life of Queen Elizabeth and the works of William Shakespeare. Explore full texts of plays in PDF format, interactive word games, challenges, and puzzles, historical lessons (some are interactive), and fun facts about Shakespeare and his theater. A word of caution: many of the activities on this site require prior knowledge of Shakespearean plays and characters. Choose wisely based on the level and language skills of your students, and the depth of your study of Shakespeare. Share some Shakespearean insults and vocabulary by way of introduction to students on a projector or interactive whiteboard before allowing students to use it individually or with a partner. Access the sections entitled "games, challenges and puzzles," and save them as a favorite on classroom computers for use as a learning center or station. Have students complete some of the puzzles or crosswords as a way to review a unit on the Playwright or courtship, courtly love and of course - Queen Elizabeth. Challenge students explore the site and create a quick presentation of what they learned. Students can create brief online posters using a tool such as Padlet, reviewed here.
