There's more to this site than first meets the eye. In addition to a chronology of American writers and literature from 1620 to 1920, the author includes a synchronous chronology of historical events, which provides context for the literature listings. In addition, the author has created biographies and references for many of the authors listed, as well as links to other sites which cover related issues and events. Plan to spend some time with this one.

tag(s): literature (214)

In the Classroom

Use the author biographies as the basis for student research reports on specific authors. One creative assignment is to have students research a specific author and "create" a social media page, using an approved platform, including blog posts and references to the author's works. Students could include information about the author within their profile and even relate the author to their peers by listing a few of their "friends." A great way to get students interested in the authors and relate it to something they're very familiar with.

Use the "teach yourself Chaucer" section of this website to show students how Middle English was spoken, and what Chaucer's work would have sounded like to his contemporaries. In this section are quick "lessons," aka brief excerpts explaining pronunciation in various parts of the book. Use the language charts over the interactive whiteboard to quickly explain the difference between Modern and Middle English. This would be great in an English or Social Studies class studying Chaucer and the Middle Ages.

Though Jane Austen wrote only six novels, there are enough to give your students a choice. Allow students to read the book of their choice individually, in pairs, or small groups. Have them choose the book they want to read by going through the book titles and reading the first couple of pages for the books; there are actually two pages for each chapter in the books, but reading the first pages for two or three chapters should be enough to pique their interest in one of the books. After the students have read their books have them put together a presentation using Sway, reviewed here. Allow them to choose the format with which they wish to present the book to their classmates, they can choose an interactive poster, brochure, newsletter, and others.
