Originally designed as an education resource for the DC Memorial Tree Groves Project, a national memorial to the victims of September 11th, this delightful site contains a collection of poetry, essays, and multicultural folktales that share tree-related themes. Search by country, type of tree, or category (humorous, scary, or mythical). The curricular resources are designed primarily for the elementary classroom, but older students will enjoy the on-line essays and poems. If 19th century British authors are part of your curriculum spend some moments browsing through this site that sheds light on the lives and work of the authors of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre . Walk the streets of the Town of Haworth in Yorkshire and experience the village as it was known by the Bronte sisters. Visit the chronology section to discover connections between events in the personal lives of the sisters and the economic, political, and social conditions of the world in which they lived. Use this site as a introductory activity before reading one of the many books by one of the Bronte sisters. The family history will provide some background on the two authors, that would be great contextual information for students before beginning a class reading of one of their novels. Make the Bard more approachable for younger students with this clever, interactive resource. Kids of all ages can enjoy delving into the life of Queen Elizabeth and the works of William Shakespeare. Explore full texts of plays in PDF format, interactive word games, challenges, and puzzles, historical lessons (some are interactive), and fun facts about Shakespeare and his theater. A word of caution: many of the activities on this site require prior knowledge of Shakespearean plays and characters. Choose wisely based on the level and language skills of your students, and the depth of your study of Shakespeare. Use to introduce the Elizabethan era, review important concepts, or extend a literature unit with a bit of history. Created by the Folger Shakespeare Library.

In the Classroom
Share some Shakespearean insults and vocabulary by way of introduction to students on a projector or interactive whiteboard before allowing students to use it individually or with a partner. Access the sections entitled "games, challenges and puzzles," and save them as a favorite on classroom computers for use as a learning center or station. Have students complete some of the puzzles or crosswords as a way to review a unit on the Playwright or courtship, courtly love and of course - Queen Elizabeth. Challenge students explore the site and create a quick presentation of what they learned. Students can create brief online posters using a tool such as Padlet, reviewed here.

Texts and contexts, discussion questions, Web resources, and illustrations are provided for each era of English literature from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century; a review section includes online multiple-choice quizzes. Audio readings in Old English and Middle English provide a unique opportunity for students to hear and experience the evolution of the English language. Interviews conducted between 1932 and 1975, reveal how former slaves felt about their owners, their families, and their freedom. This British site offers engaging, highly visual presentations of poetry that will draw even the most poem-phobic students into the presentation. There are many options from which to choose, and the variety of presentation styles will help ensure that there is something for everyone. Language arts teachers will find this one well worth the effort. The audio requires Real Player, and a few activities require Shockwave.
