If "beat generation" authors such as Kerouac, Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti are on your syllabus, then get your students "on the road" to this site. Although the site is definitely "unofficial," it presents some great information with poetic passion! Especially fascinating is the section entitled "Beat Connections in Rock Music." The site also presents interesting links to other "out of the main stream" artists such as William Blake and the Pre-Raphaelites.

The Pearl S. Buck Biography page from the University of Pennsylvania Department of English provides a concise overview of the life and accomplishments of author and humanitarian Pearl S. Buck. Students can learn about Buck's childhood in China, her experiences bridging Eastern and Western cultures, and her rise to literary fame through works such as The Good Earth. The biography also highlights her humanitarian efforts and advocacy for cross-cultural understanding. This resource is valuable for literature, history, biography, and cultural studies lessons, helping students explore how an author's life experiences influence their writing and worldview.

Have students create a timeline of Pearl S. Buck's life with Timeline Infographic Templates by Canva, reviewed here using information from the biography. Students can include important events, places they lived, major publications, and humanitarian achievements. After reading about Buck's experiences in both China and the United States, have students create a Venn diagram using the 2 and 3 Interactive Venn Diagrams by ClassTools, reviewed here comparing the two cultures. There's more to this site than first meets the eye. In addition to a chronology of American writers and literature from 1620 to 1920, the author includes a synchronous chronology of historical events, which provides context for the literature listings. In addition, the author has created biographies and references for many of the authors listed, as well as links to other sites which cover related issues and events. Plan to spend some time with this one.

tag(s): literature (215)

In the Classroom

Use the author biographies as the basis for student research reports on specific authors. One creative assignment is to have students research a specific author and "create" a social media page, using an approved platform, including blog posts and references to the author's works. Students could include information about the author within their profile and even relate the author to their peers by listing a few of their "friends." A great way to get students interested in the authors and relate it to something they're very familiar with.
