KidPub
Grades
1 to 12tag(s): writing (309)
In the Classroom
This site would be an excellent motivating tool for students participating in writing and literature. Save the site as a learning center or station, and allow students both to peruse the stories and submit their own stories to be published. Stories are separated by genre, making it easier to tailor student's focus during a particular unit. During a poetry unit, instruct students to examine only the poetry and to submit their own. Very useful site to inspire and motivate students through the use of their peer's work! You must be registered and logged in to add items to your favorites.

Elements of Style - Strunk
Grades
9 to 12In the Classroom
Have students use Bartleby.com to look up a style rule from The Elements of Style and apply it by revising a short piece of their writing. Assign students to explore a section of Roget's Thesaurus on the site and create a "word web" using Whimsical Mind Maps reviewed here of synonyms and related terms to enhance their vocabulary for descriptive or persuasive writing. Invite students to choose a historical or literary text from Bartleby.com, read an excerpt, and present a short analysis connecting the work's themes or style to a modern-day issue or piece of literature.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

Give students a list of fun facts (e.g., "Won a Grammy," "Wrote a bestselling novel") and a list of names from the site. Students can use the website to match each fact with the correct person. Each student selects one writer, musician, artist, or actor from the site and creates a trading card that includes their photo, a brief biography, a notable achievement, and a quote or fun fact. Have them use paper or a template from Canva, reviewed here. Have students research one person from the site and write an imagined interview, with 5-7 questions and answers. They can role-play the interview in pairs or write it as a dialogue script.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

6 to 12tag(s): radio (16)
In the Classroom
Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on the beginnings of the radio, or the evolution of entertainment in Western Society. Allow students to listen to some of the broadcasts, making sure to include headphones in the center. Most entertaining would be the historic "War of the Worlds," broadcast, which could be easily compared the recent Hollywood movie. Start a class discussion on the differences between radio and movies, focusing on the difference between seeing and hearing the action. This site would definitely add some interest to radio, a topic that may seem boring from the outset.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member
