Here's a site with resources specifically for ESL students. The concentration is on building fluency in English using a variety of conversational and reading strategies. There are also links to a number of other ESL resources. Some of the material is designed for adult learners, but could be adapted for secondary students.

tag(s): vocabulary development (100), word study (58)

In the Classroom

Under the Resources tab at the top, find quizzes to both give students more practice with reading English and content material from other classes where they may be having trouble. There are quizzes on history, geography, grammar and science topics to name a few. Allow students to work on the quizzes during a lull in the class on classroom computers or a computer lab.

Kids level Dictionary that translate English words into; French, Spanish, German & Portuguese. Limited word list. Also has an Information section from the word list that is more like a mini Encyclopedia. The picture dictionary is a valuable tool for ESL/ELL students trying to communicate in a regular classroom.

tag(s): communication (120), vocabulary (248)

In the Classroom

Not only is this a great resource for ESOL teachers, but some of the terms that are hyperlinked even have attached worksheets and graphic organizers attached to help other teachers incorporate the "term" into their teaching. One for example that has extra Resources is the entry on Barack Obama - which could be useful for civics or history teachers teaching students about our current political environment.

Web Whiteboard is a free, collaborative, online whiteboard that doesn't require registration. All collaboration takes place in real-time; share the URL with collaborators. Just click the link to begin using the whiteboard tools; boards expire after 24 hours. Web Whiteboard also includes a direct link to create a whiteboard using Miro, reviewed here. Web Whiteboard tools include templates, sticky notes, text, and drawing options. When integrated with a Miro account, many other resources are available, including Google Drive, Adobe Express, and Unsplash images.

In the Classroom

Allow students to create collaborative drawings as responses to literature. They can map out the plot or themes, add labels, create character studies, and more. Share the finished products on an interactive whiteboard, projector, or your class website. Have a group of students create a drawing that another group can use as a writing prompt. Use Web Whiteboard as a brainstorming or sketching space for groups or the class to share ideas for a significant project or to solve a real-world problem. Use this site with students in a computer lab (or on laptops) to create a drawing of the story's setting as it is read aloud. As a creative assessment idea, have students draw out a simple cartoon with stick figures to explain a more complex process, such as how a democracy works. If you are lucky enough to teach in a BYOD setting, use Web Whiteboard to demonstrate and illustrate any concept while students use the chat and drawing tools to interact in real time. If you are studying weather, have students diagram the layers of the atmosphere and what happens during a thunderstorm. Introduce this tool to students who are working on group projects. Alternatively, have students use this to work as partners or as a small team to complete complex math problems or equations. Give students a problem by typing it on their board. Then have them work through it together, noting all their reasoning and steps along the way.

Search for interactives that are relevant to your subject. Share the website of the particular challenge you want students to play on your website or wiki. Be sure to check if the site is allowed as some districts filter game-type tools. Ask for permission for this educational site and then share with your students. Create an activity for test review or just for practice of essential content of your course. Have your students take material they are learning about and make their own interactive challenge.
