A great source of primary documents covering many topics of interest to grade school children including the real stories some of the people killed on Sept. 11. Although this is usually a pay site ($9.95/yr), free membership is available for educators, schools, and libraries. Each feature article is divided into "Story Chapter Links" and highlighted vocabulary clicks to photographs, maps, artifacts, documents, audio-visual clips, and articles with more information about the word. Topics offered include history, culture, literature, disasters, and media. You can find passages on topics related to almost any student's interests and use the resources to teacher reading skills.
In December, 2006, Awesome Stories announced free accounts for individuals, as well, but for a "limited time." If you would like your students to be abe to use it at home, consider setting up accounts for students, as well, while they are free.

In the Classroom
This is a great jumping off point for beginning researchers. You will find a wonderful compilation of photographs and other realia about the topics. Teach comprehension skills by using the first four chapters and asking students to predict or write aht they think would come next. Bring up the stories on an interactive whiteboard to highlight important terms and access the links that help students build connections to content. Content covers topics including world news, science, health, education, culture, and U.S. history, using simplified vocabulary and a slower speaking pace to support comprehension. Are you producing a play that is in need of some accented English speech, or do you teach dialogue? This website offers accents/speech patterns from all over the world. In the "browse" section, you are able to click on an area of the world and hear a paragraph spoken from a native of that country,state, or region. The same paragraph is spoken in each example. The paragraph contains all of the needed vowel/consonant combinations, so that an interested student could easily compare and match a needed sound. You, too, can submit your own English accent recording to this site. It is a perfect site for those who desire some authenticity when it comes to learning about how different cultures speak the English language. Over 553 samples have been recorded for the site, and you can add one of your own. This site requires the Quicktime plug-in. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page

You could also share some of the sound files as you study literature written in dialect to students can "hear" what it really sounds like. A Maths Dictionary for Kids is a fantastic interactive online math dictionary for students which explains over 600 common mathematical terms and math words in simple language. Enter the site using the link on the home page and choose (or browse) math terms. Math terms come to life with a click of the mouse! Virtually all terms have an animated or interactive component - for example, choose quadrilateral to view a definition along with an image of a quadrilateral, the next button changes the quadrilateral to a square along with the new definition, choose next again to see the square change to a rhombus, and so on. Virtually all standard math terms are included so users are likely to find anything they want along with some new terms! A link is included at the bottom of each section to print each definition easily.
Another wonderful portion of the site is a new section titled Math Charts. Search this portion by choosing from areas such as numbers, operations, decimals, or much more then choose one of the sub-topics. Each chart includes a visual description of the topic and is specifically created to be printed for classroom use, choose the print button at the bottom of the page and the content will enlarge to fill the most it can in whatever size paper is chosen. Be sure not to miss the blackline masters located at the bottom of this section that contain many printables for classroom use such as fraction strips, hundreds charts, and much more.

Web Whiteboard is a free, collaborative, online whiteboard that doesn't require registration. All collaboration takes place in real-time; share the URL with collaborators. Just click the link to begin using the whiteboard tools; boards expire after 24 hours. Web Whiteboard also includes a direct link to create a whiteboard using Miro, reviewed here. Web Whiteboard tools include templates, sticky notes, text, and drawing options. When integrated with a Miro account, many other resources are available, including Google Drive, Adobe Express, and Unsplash images.

In the Classroom
Allow students to create collaborative drawings as responses to literature. They can map out the plot or themes, add labels, create character studies, and more. Share the finished products on an interactive whiteboard, projector, or your class website. Have a group of students create a drawing that another group can use as a writing prompt. Use Web Whiteboard as a brainstorming or sketching space for groups or the class to share ideas for a significant project or to solve a real-world problem. Use this site with students in a computer lab (or on laptops) to create a drawing of the story's setting as it is read aloud. As a creative assessment idea, have students draw out a simple cartoon with stick figures to explain a more complex process, such as how a democracy works. If you are lucky enough to teach in a BYOD setting, use Web Whiteboard to demonstrate and illustrate any concept while students use the chat and drawing tools to interact in real time. If you are studying weather, have students diagram the layers of the atmosphere and what happens during a thunderstorm. Introduce this tool to students who are working on group projects. Alternatively, have students use this to work as partners or as a small team to complete complex math problems or equations. Give students a problem by typing it on their board.
