This FREE online simulation is designed to give students experience in running a business. Registration is required to participate. Players can take on others in their geographic area, or play against the computer. Using variables like price and production quantity, players allocate their money to particular parts of the business, and consider advice from computer generated stakeholders as they compete against other "businesses" to make a profit. The graphics are fairly rudimentary, but there is plenty of complexity here for students to evaluate as they work through the game. You will need to spend a little time yourself in playing a practice game in order to be able to prepare students to get the best learning experience; otherwise they will just randomly click options without thinking about the impact on their business plan.

Each lesson is offered in a slide format beginning with an introduction to the activity, followed by questions to answer. Upon answering questions, feedback is provided. If the answer was incorrect, an explanation of the correct solution is provided. The site also provides several math games practicing fractions, ratio, data, and percent. Spanish and ESL/ELL teachers will want to note that there is a small sample of lessons available in Spanish on the site. Many of the topics are also applicable in Family and Consumer Science or business classes, as well.

Pick and choose from segments such as making money, getting out of debt, saving money, understanding insurance, and entrepreneurship. Along with each segment, there is a facilitator's guide, web exclusive content, activities and simulations. There is a comment section associated with the site, and limited advertising for other PBS products, so preview before making available to students. A written transcript of the segments can be made available to ELL/ESL students.

The nature of this site makes it especially conducive to a "learn at your own pace" approach to managing money. Students can access areas of interest, dig as deeply as they are interested into the associated activities, and tailor their own experience. Alternatively, the video segments might be shown on an interactive whiteboard or projector, and students could work in groups on the activities. Finally, you might choose to isolate particular activities and use them in conjunction with your regular curriculum and lessons, and skip the video segments completely. Homestyler is a free online interior design planner. Members choose a layout plan, add details such as doors, windows, and furnishings, and then decide on color schemes for interior decorating. Designs are viewable in both a 2D and 3D format. This is a free online program that requires no downloading. Registration does require an email address. This site may or may not be fully accessible inside your school filtering. Check to make sure all portions of this site are available when using your school's network. Homestyler does have a retail component that suggests certain name brands for appliances, and building supplies but the 3D designing capability outshines this form of advertising.

Members click and drag design components onto the main layout page. The free draw tool is a bit trickier to control but is similar to drawing tools in other programs. The perimeter measurement scrolls alongside the line you are drawing. The interface for such a complicated concept is intuitive. Students will need explicit instructions on how to operate this program.Use an interactive whiteboard or projector to share the tutorial presentation and demonstrate how to use the design tools. Divide students into cooperative learning groups to explore the site. Consider this resource to help math students visualize how to compute the surface area of three-dimensional shapes and understand how area and volume change with scale. Social Studies and History teachers can ask students to re-create the interior of an early American home, Greek Temple or even their own classroom. With guidance, this could be a wonderful tool to help younger students understand interior mapping skills. Classrooms focusing on "real-world learning" may find this a valuable resource tool to help students create design plans for an alternative environment.

Identify misconceptions about energy use and energy availability by assigning students to read blogs, news reports, and editorials or through use of a teacher made quiz identifying attitudes and understandings about energy. Divide students into groups to peruse the site and verify the information given with the sources listed on the site as well as other sources. Be sure to discuss credibility of sites and how to determine this with the students as well. Assign blog posts, conventional or multimedia posters, and other assignments to share the information learned. Create a concept map that showcases attitudes and reasons why they are so prevalent. Be sure to add facts to this as well. Create a campaign at school or in your community so that others can benefit from understanding the science behind energy use and availability. This tool is great for schools without access to different free video or multimedia creation software. Create 30-second videos, including music choices from over 50 soundtracks. A typical thirty-second video requires twelve images, making this a reasonable option for projects with middle and high school level students. Also look through their many templates making this video creator easy to use for anyone. Students aged 13 and above can set up their own Animoto account if they have a school email address.

Demonstrate how to sign up for Animoto and use it with students on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Students need a basic understanding of how to upload pictures, videos, and other media, especially when adding personalized content. Use stock images and media available through the site if you prefer. Once you are registered, click the "Create" button and follow the on-screen instructions. When adding personal images and videos, the program lets you search your computer files. Add music from the site bank or from personal music sources (copyright-free, of course). Finalize the video with the last click, then view it. Share easily using the provided codes or export tools. Use Animoto to make commercials, science fair previews, and animated shorts in any content area. Have students create "advertisements" for an organism or a literary character. The Story of Stuff Project is named after a 20-minute web cartoon that illustrates how all the "stuff" we use affects our lives and our planet. While the cartoon clearly has a liberal-leaning political agenda, that should not deter you from using it. In fact, asking students to point out its biases would be an important lesson in sorting out perspective in a persuasive argument. The site adds cartoons and movies dealing with other "wasteful" topics fairly often, such as the "cap and trade" plastic beads, microfibers, water issues, energy issue, bottled water, and electronics. The "downloads" tab offers PDF versions of the script, posters and other promotional material, and short teaser video clips of the film.

In the Classroom
Useful in classes on economics, ecology, consumer living, sociology or current events, the film would provide a wonderful discuss lead-in on topics ranging from consumer decision making to the environment. Because the site operates under the "Creative Commons" copyright agreement, you can download your own copy of the film for educational use or order a DVD copy.

In addition to browsing by title, teachers can filter worksheets by subject area, grade level, and skills, making it easier to find materials that align with instructional goals. The site offers worksheets in both PDF and Word formats, allowing teachers to edit and customize questions as needed. Because resources are user-submitted, all materials should be previewed carefully for quality, appropriateness, and classroom fit. Teachers should also follow district and school guidelines regarding movie use, including licensing and content considerations. In the Classroom

Encourage students to create their own questions from the movie (reminding them of its relevance to your subject area), choose the best worksheets to use, and submit them. Require students to add thought-provoking questions tied to the content for further consideration. Use questions that go beyond factual recall to tie concepts together, explain phenomena, or uncover misconceptions. Continue the discussion of concepts beyond the paper through open discussion or blog posts. Rather than creating a worksheet, have your students create an interactive online poster using Genially, reviewed here.
