This interactive food pyramid introduces young children to healthy foods using kid-friendly language. Click on a section of the pyramid to reveal the various foods included in that group. Then click on individual food items to read about their nutritional value. This site includes many original graphics, and links to age-appropriate games and activities.

In 2011, the food pyramid was replaced with Choose My Plate. Learn more (here). Even so, this site offers a decent amount of information on general nutrition. Also, a few of the links under "Fun Things To Do" were not working at the time of this review.

You may want to introduce this site to students starting with the four minute video Storytime about Sparky the fire dog. Share a fire prevention game as a center on your classroom computers. Towards the end of your fire prevention unit, have students complete the entertaining activities for becoming a member of Sparky's Fire Safety Club. These activities would be ideal for use with computer stations.

Display this site on your interactive whiteboard or with a projector to introduce to students. Pair strong readers with weaker readers. Have all students use Wordnik, reviewed here, to hear the word pronounced and to read the different definitions. Enhance student learning by having them make a Padlet, reviewed here, to list the words and write the diffent definitions. Then, students can discuss which definition is correct for their use; older students can discuss how the two definitions are similar. For instance atrium can be architecture or part of anaomy, then discuss how those two concepts are related.

Introduce your students to the microbial worlds of bacteria, fungi, and viruses with this site that provides entertaining background information, ideas for classroom experiments, and a collection of "Microbes in the News" articles. Find out when hands should be washed and what happens when they are not! Interested students can even explore a "Careers" link that offers interviews with experts in the field, advice on finding a mentor, and tips on how to become a microbiologist. Available in English and Spanish.

In the Classroom

Use the videos on this site as a supplement to a lecture on microbes. One video that would be great, "E. Coli Animation," shows the growth and reproduction of e.coli in a quick YouTube clip. Not all school internet systems allow for access to YouTube, so make sure to check your school's policies before use. If it does work, some of these videos do a great job of detailing specific microbes and their life-cycles. Definitely a lot more interesting and fun for students to watch than reading the same information out of a textbook!
