Introduce this site on the interactive whiteboard or projector, before allowing students to explore the site independently. Use the stories as a writing prompt - after students have explored for a set amount of time, have them write their own ghost stories about areas in the state. Try this one as a counterpoint to a traditional explorers unit, or as part of a study of the Maya, Inca, or other native cultures.

Use the images on this site to create a picture walk activity in your classroom. Select 10-15 of the more descriptive images, preferably with different subjects. Assign students to stand at specific images, rotating every 30-45 seconds. In that time, students should quickly jot down what they observe, infer and predict about each. After the walk is done, have a class discussion based on the notes that students have taken. The fast facts on this site are a great way for students and teachers to quickly review the principles of a religion before learning about it within a history classroom. Often towards high school, the focus veers from a basic explanation of the religion to more of a discussion on the religion's impact on society. For those needing a refresher, this would be a great way to summarize via interactive whiteboard or projector. Google Maps is a free mapping tool for exploring places, planning trips, and understanding the relationships between locations. Search for an address, landmark, or business, then zoom in and out or switch to Satellite view to explore imagery of the area. Where available, use Street View's yellow Pegman icon to explore panoramic views of streets and surroundings. These images are not live, and their age and coverage vary by location. Google Maps also helps users find nearby businesses, schools, parks, and other points of interest, get directions, and share locations or routes. A free Google account lets you save favorite places and organize them into lists. The service works in a web browser and is available as a free app for Android and iOS. On a computer, supported maps can be embedded in websites using the sharing menu. For creating custom maps with markers, layers, and imported location files, use the related Google My Maps tool.

If you teach geography, this one's a must. It is also helpful for showing students WHERE a story or news event takes place. In lower grades, use it to show students the basics of their community. Teach map skills by showing students their own community. Zoom in on their street or on the school. This site and its more sophisticated cousin, Google Earth, are great on an interactive whiteboard. Set up a class Google account (or use student accounts if permitted). Have students create their own custom route plans to tour historic sites. Challenge math students to plan the most economical route to visit several vacation destinations, including gas mileage and gas prices. Have students create placemark files of the important places in the life of a famous person or the route traveled by a particular unit during the Civil War. Have student groups create placemarker files to show environmental sites, habitats, landforms, or anything you can place on a map. Embed projects in a class wiki using the handy embed code offered as a sharing option. Not comfortable with wikis? Use this searchable resource to foster understanding of Islamic history, law, and practice. The "Discover Islam" section provides a beginner's introduction to understanding Islam and Muslim traditions, as well as essays addressing similarities and differences between Islam and Christianity. The site includes a video about the Qur'an, a PowerPoint title The Rights of Believers, a Shi'ite encyclopedia, photos of sites sacred to Islam, examples of Islamic artwork, and a collection of PDF downloadable fact sheets - available in numerous languages - covering a range of topics.
In the Classroom
This site would be extremely useful in an upper-level course, in which teachers are comfortable with the student's reading ability. Some of the articles explain the background of Islam in a way that is both easy to understand and concise. Use the articles to supplement the textbook! This site would also be great for students working on research projects about Islam. Post the site on the teacher wiki or web page to allow them to access it both in and out of the classroom.

In addition to presenting a portrait of one of Europe's most infamous concentration camps, the site explores the historical context in which Hitler and the Nazis rose to power and follows the chain of events that led to the development of mass extermination camps. While this is no longer a current event, this article does a great job of explaining the roots of the problems that continue to plague Iraq to this day. Either print or display the article to students on the interactive whiteboard or projector. (students could also read this for homework) Either way, this article provides enough background information that it could lead to an excellent discussion of the Iraqi conflict. What a great way to have students know American geography better than physically moving the states in their places? Introduce this site on the interactive whiteboard before allowing cooperative learning groups to complete the activity on classroom computers. Have a class challenge as students try and compete to see which group can get the lowest average error mileage.
