This site offers historical, cultural, political, and travel information about Malaysia. The reading level may be a bit high for some middle schoolers, but the site could be a great source of research information for studies of other cultures and peoples.
In the Classroom
Use the historic timeline to study the spread of Islam to Malaysia and the rest of South East Asia during the 15th century. The timeline is extremely detailed and can actually be used as a learning center or station too. To help guide students through the content, we recommend creating a graphic organizer. This site offers a thorough and graphically well-designed introduction to the history, cultures, and 20th century politics of India and its neighbors. While a bit text-heavy, visuals support most of the sections, and the content could be useful for research projects or general information. The site includes a short biography of Mahatma Ghandi. This is a "labor of love" site created by two faculty members at UCLA.

This is an elegant Indian site describing archeological excavations at the site of Lothal, an ancient city on the Indus river. There are interactive maps, descriptions of life in the ancient city, and a catalog of artifacts found during the excavations. Beautiful quality, and a little slow as a result, but if you're looking for examples of how archaeologists work, it's worth the wait.

Use the images in this site to create a visual discovery activity during a unit on the Indus River Valley. Select 3-5 of the more powerful images, placing them in a Powerpoint presentation to be displayed over the interactive whiteboard or projector. Allow the class to view the images for 30-45 seconds each, writing down what they observe, infer and predict about each image. After all the images have been seen, start a class discussion based on student's findings. National Geographic publishes this ongoing collection of short documentary pieces, each of which has both text and audio narration in high quality stereo sound, with lots of natural effects. For students with special needs, who have trouble either reading or attending, these short sound clips provide a well-constructed exposure to topics ranging from science to cultures and celebrations. Watch for new segments each week, along with a monthly feature presentation.

Because there are a LOT of short recordings on this site, be sure to examine it thoroughly before allowing students to use it. Find one or several informative recordings that could benefit your classroom, and use them as introductory pieces before beginning a unit or lesson. Play the recording using the interactive whiteboard as a starter, previewing the lesson to come, allowing students to reflect on the recording via writing or verbally in a class discussion. Enhance student learning and replace paper pen by asking students to write blogs sharing information learned using a site like Edublog, reviewed here. Edublog offers tools for creating class and individual blogs. An excellent addition to any unit on Early - Modern British history! Assign students monarchs for your appropriate time period, and have them research the site to find out more about their specific person. Have each student create a quick biography of their monarch in an attempt to show how important their roles were to English Society. Have students create a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. This site allows users to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate the photo as if it is a news report. This site could be used for many disciplines (science, English, history, art, music, even math-unit on other currencies and how to convert).

Use this site during a geography, economics, or civic class on a unit that compares the cultures of countries around the world. Save the site as a favorite on classroom computers, and have students access the site individually. Assign every student a country and have them create a travel brochure about it using a tool such as Padlet (reviewed here). Make sure to have students include similar topics to allow for a compare/contrast discussion to follow! Its most useful feature is a set of links to the embassies themselves, some of which are fairly obscure. Good resource for a student interested in finding out specifics of a foreign country and their diplomatic services.

Use the embassy row tour as a hands-on activity during a lesson on international diplomacy. Have students look at the site in cooperative learning groups, with the intentions of creating their own tour of embassy row. Using the images and information on the site, have students create a multi-media presentation detailing what an embassy is, why it's important, and show examples of embassies in D.C. Have students create a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. This site allows users to narrate a picture. This is a Library of Congress collection of photos taken for the World Transportation Commission in the 1890s. Teachers, students, or parents could use this online archive to illustrate both what foreign nations were like a hundred years ago, and also the subjects that Americans were interested in recording during their journeys. This is a nice example of the primary resources which the Library makes available on the web.

Use the images on this site to create a visual discovery activity in your classroom, introducing the topic of evolving transportation. Select 3-5 images from this site, choosing the most powerful and moving images. Placing the images on individual slides, allow students 1-2 minutes to observe each image. During that time period, students should be taking notes based on what they observe, predict and infer about each image. The more powerful and detailed the image is, the more information students can take out. After the class has observed all the chosen images, have a class discussion based on the notes students took. Use the images on this site to create a "picture walk" in your classroom, introducing the topic of Pre-communist Russia. Select 8-10 of the more powerful and diverse images, hanging them up in different locations around your classroom. Have students rotate around the classroom every 30-45 seconds, jotting down what they observe and infer about each image until the entire class has completed the circuit. After the class is back in their seats, have a class discussion based on what they observed and what this says about Russia before the communist revolution. This is an excellent resource to explore all events within the renaissance, from the emergence of the middle class to the impact of the Bubonic Plague. Divide students into cooperative learning groups to explore the site. Have each group pick an element of the presentation to explore in more depth, and have each group create a poster to "teach" their peers about their section. The PBS Nova series describes life in a medieval castle and the process of laying siege to a castle. The highlight of this site is the building of a trebuchet - a medieval catapult with huge throwing capacity. There's even a "besiege the castle" shockwave game that shows the principles of physics on which the trebuchet operates. The castle buffs in your class will love this one.
In the Classroom
Looking at the site and the Teachers Guide, there are plenty of ways to incorporate this site into your classroom. The guide itself lists ways to use the site within lessons, so be sure to look at that before using. The game would also make a great hands on activity for students directly after instruction, whether used as a learning station or as a cooperative group activity.
