Step into the history of secret messages with this collection of introductory readings about cryptography and encryption. The resource begins with an explanation of plaintext, ciphertext, encryption, and simple substitution, including an easy-to-follow example of shifting letters in a message. Students can then explore separate pages devoted to well-known encryption methods and developments, including the Caesar cipher, simple substitution, VigenA'?re and Gronsfeld ciphers, the German Enigma machine, RSA public-key encryption, and PGP. The material combines the history of cryptography with explanations of how various approaches work, making it useful for connecting mathematics, computer science, technology, and history. Some links and technological references reflect the age of this resource, so teachers should preview individual pages and links before assigning them.

Documenting the American South, commonly called DocSouth, is a free digital archive of primary sources related to the history, literature, and culture of the American South. The browse page organizes materials into sixteen thematic collections that include digitized books, letters, speeches, manuscripts, photographs, oral histories, and other historical documents. Topics include enslavement and emancipation, the Southern Black church, North Carolina history, Southern literature, the Civil War, World War I, and oral history. Users can also browse by author, title, Library of Congress subject heading, or geographic location. Many texts include searchable transcriptions alongside scanned pages, making close reading easier, although the older site design and the length and complexity of some documents may challenge younger learners. Teachers should preview selections because some primary sources contain racist language, descriptions of violence and enslavement, and other historically sensitive material.

The images and primary sources all show different perspectives of what society was like in our Southern States during this time. Teachers can also use this site as an example of great primary sources or to demonstrate the kinds of evidence historians can draw from sources like this by having group work focused on analyzing a particular source from the site. Have students create a source-based timeline with Timeline Tool by ReadWriteThink, reviewed here, using brief quotations, dates, captions, and citations from DocSouth.

Go straight to the federal source for information about copyright law, registration, ownership records, permissions, fair use, public-domain questions, and current copyright policy. The U.S. Copyright Office website provides plain-language explanations, frequently asked questions, downloadable circulars, the text of Title 17, searchable registration records, a Fair Use Index of court decisions, and resources for students and teachers. Its Learning Engine video series introduces topics such as copyright protection, internet content, ideas, fair use, registration, copyright duration, and common misconceptions, while more detailed publications support advanced research by educators, librarians, creators, and secondary students. The Fair Use Index is helpful for examining how courts have evaluated particular uses, but the Office explains that it does not replace legal advice or provide an automatic answer for every situation. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.
