In the Classroom
Share polls on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start a new unit, asking questions about the material. Discuss in groups why students would choose a particular answer to uncover misconceptions. Use for Daily quiz questions to check student understanding as a means of formative assessment. Use a class account to have student groups alternate to create a new poll for the next day. Place a poll on your teacher web page as a homework inspiration or to ask questions to increase parent involvement. Older students may want to include polls on their student blogs to increase reader involvement. Have students create polls to use at the start of project presentations. Navigate and understand the organization of TeachersFirst Edge resource categories. 2. Identify and select free digital tools that support creative, student-centered knowledge demonstration. 3. Develop a practical plan for integrating an Edge tool into an upcoming instructional unit by creating a sample learning artifact. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

This article explains the idea of short, focused research projects as emphasized by Common Core. Find out the background, the why and what, and more as you see an example you can use when teaching about the water cycle in elementary grades. Use a readaloud of a recommended book to get your class started. This particular example is for lower elementary, but the article is useful for elementary teachers at any level. The article and the sample project are written (and field tested!) by an experienced elementary library/media specialist.

We all know that spark of excitement in the classroom when a student finally "cracks the code" or solves a particularly tricky problem. Puzzles are like a gym for the mind, building the reasoning abilities students will use across every subject and throughout their lives. Whether they're working through a Sudoku grid, untangling a riddle, cracking a code, or solving a brain teaser, students are practicing essential skills such as pattern recognition, deductive reasoning, strategic thinking, and perseverance. The beauty of puzzles is that they feel like play, but they're doing serious cognitive work--teaching students to test hypotheses, eliminate possibilities, and think several steps ahead. To help you cultivate more "aha!" moments, we have curated a collection of logic, word games, and puzzle resources to challenge, engage, and inspire your learners. First, upload your file or drag it onto the workspace, select a language and select the type of file to save. Options include Word, Excel, PPT, or TXT documents. When the conversion is complete, download and save the file to your device.

Bookmark and save this conversion tool for many classroom needs. Convert worksheets saved as PDFs to Word documents to edit and easily make changes. For example, many student worksheets available with textbooks are in PDF format. PDF files are the most common document type available; take advantage of this conversion site to extract information and explore different scenarios using the original formulas. Science teachers can take lab activities and refine questions or add instructions as needed for their classroom.
