For those who just can't wait for the next Harry Potter book, this site offers plenty of Harry Potter news, discussions, galleries with possible title pages and other illustrations, a page of avatar graphics, links to Potter movie trailers, and anything imaginable to do with the books and/or the movies. This is a consumer site, so it is a bit more "Hollywood" than "education," but there are portions that promote discussion, character analysis, and pure love of reading.

The Wizarding Maps are great for your visual students and in case you're worried about your science-minded kids trying the magic spells or potions, those pages direct students to the pages in the different books where they are referenced. PBS LearningMedia's Shakespeare Uncovered is a collection of resources, including videos and discussion questions, that delve into Shakespeare's history, context, and relevance of Shakespeare's greatest plays. It explores the stories behind Shakespeare's plays, incorporating history, biography, iconic performances, new analysis, and the perspectives of celebrated hosts. There are plenty of interesting lesson plans such as The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Shakespeare's Characters, Supernatural Elements in Shakespeare, In Shakespeare's Time are just a few interesting titles. Click Episodes on the bottom menu to view rare footage from some renowned productions, including Taming of the Shrew with commentary by Morgan Freeman. The series is built on interviews with actors, directors and scholars, clips from screen versions of the plays. PBS LearningMedia's "Shakespeare Uncovered" series offers a variety of resources, including lesson plans and classroom activities, that can be used as a teacher's guide. Enjoy the wealth of material put together for you and your students! Share the videos with your students on your projector or whiteboard. Flip your classroom and assign students to view the video at home and be prepared to discuss the next day in class. To make sure students are prepared use Acclaim, reviewed here to add questions to the video. (Most videos are between 45 - 60 minutes.) Use this program as a "background knowledge" builder before having the students read the play. In the Classroom
You are limited only by your imagination in the use of this site with high school students. Assigning different "translations" would be the least of the activities. Connecting and writing or reporting on the many related sites can create endless projects from "Market Day" to storytelling to panel discussions to PowerPoint demonstrations.DO be aware that "Playing on my iPod" will take students to other students' sites, so you might want to limit and be specific about what you want them to do; checking that first yourself may show that your school's filtering blocks those sites anyway. There is also a link to buy shirts from zazzle.com featuring Chaucer-related sayings; again, your filtering may block this, or you might want to address that issue specifically. In any case, there is too much "good stuff" here not to use at least some of it for fun and learning if you teach Chaucer et. al. Teachers of gifted students may find this site a marvelous prototype for creating a similar author-centered blog or wiki.

This may work for teachers as a reference site or even as a quiz review for students. The best part is discovering (or rediscovering) the names for those devices that are used less often, but students often ask about. This list would also work as an addition to AP literary terms that many English teachers give their AP students. Consider having your students create an ongoing class glossary wiki of literary devices with examples from your own literature study during the year. Use this site to create polls for your students (or have students create their own). The polls are embeddable in your wiki, blog, or class website. The site is still in beta. You can create a name, an expiration date for the survey, questions (multiple choice, yes or no, and ranking), and input your email address to be informed as results come into the site. If you plan to have students register individually, you may want to create your own Gmail account with up to 20 subaccounts for each group of students (by code name or number) within your classes. Here is a blog post that tells how to set up GMail subaccounts to use for any online membership service. Registration is not required to use this site. There are some advertisements and external links at this site (all appropriate at the time of this review). So if you allow students to use this site on their own, be sure to watch carefully.

This is a great activity to use before a classroom party or celebration. Have students practice the descriptive writing in the lesson plan, and use it again to create a menu for their class party and the food they'll volunteer to bring. This would be a great way to make sure the party is academic in nature, and not a waste of time in administrator's eyes.

Create a "fake" Facebook-style page for anyone or anything! It's a good idea to do a little planning ahead of time, then just follow the directions on the landing page. Give your page a name and add an image from your computer. (They insert an image for you if you do not select one, however, you can change the image by clicking on it and selecting one from your computer.) Of course you will need to use a Creative Commons or other copyright-safe image. You can also add videos and links, edit the profile, and your page is almost ready. You must add at least one post and one friend to save work. Under the "Friends" block, you can add blocks such as Family, Major Speeches, etc. Choose "save" from the options on top left side of the page, enter a password, and your unique URL for your Fakebook page appears. In the Classroom
Engage and create interest in classroom learning with Fakebook. Fakebook is terrific for creating interest in many subjects. Instead of a typical biographical report in social studies, students create a Fakebook page about their famous person. Write about presidents, founding fathers, famous scientists or artists, Civil War soldiers, and more. Have students create a timeline of any historical event (name the page for the event, such as World War II). Use Fakebook to outline a book, play, or film plot, then share with students while studying the material. To use Fakebook to study literature, create a page for the central character, the book's author, or the book's setting. For a unique twist in science class, create a Fakebook page for a periodic element or another science topic. Use the page to describe "the life" of that atom or element. In world language classes, have students do this activity (about themselves) in the second language they are learning. Create a Fakebook page for the first day of school to introduce yourself to students or at Open House for parents. Challenge students to create and share a page about themselves during the first week of school. Share a Fakebook page with students to demonstrate proper netiquette and social sharing. Be sure to share a rubric with students for all expectations of what should be included on their page. Make Fakebook one of the options for your gifted students doing projects beyond the regular curriculum.
