Here's a new twist - a site that lets users enter in the kind of literature they want to read about: country, historical period, plot type, character types - and then returns a list of children's books that meet those criteria. This is a great resource for finding reading material to complement curricular content, or to simply help a reluctant reader find a book he or she will really love.

New users can explore the Help Center and Getting Started resources for tutorials, videos, and step-by-step guidance. The Resources section offers lesson ideas, example books, subject-specific activities, and remixable templates that can be customized for different grade levels and content areas. Teachers can also access toolkits, lesson plans, and classroom implementation guides. Students can create interactive books featuring narration, comics, graphic organizers, embedded media, and collaborative elements. Books can be published and shared online through Book Creator's web reader, making them accessible on a variety of devices. The creation tools include options to add text, images, audio, video, drawings, shapes, links, and backgrounds, while the Inspector panel provides customization options for colors, layouts, and accessibility settings. The free version allows teachers to create one library with up to 40 books. Book Creator works on Chromebooks, PCs, Macs, iPads, and Android tablets through modern web browsers. In the Classroom
Create books together, as a class, as you move through a unit or topic. Enhance student learning by adding images and ideas your students suggest. Use in a flipped classroom to deliver course information. Assign several student groups a different topic and redefine their learning by having each group create their own multimedia versions as they learn more about the topic. Students can combine their books later as a class book. Make a digital bookshelf of all the versions for all to use. Challenge gifted students to modify the "standard" class text with the additional material they discover, by going deeper and learning about related topics. In lower grades, create teacher-made e-books for your young readers, perhaps adding audio - your own voice reading the text. We could do without the musical introductions, but they don't detract from the quality of this information.

Find interactive vocabulary activities using nutrition-related (not limited to nutrition) vocabulary words. Have students work in cooperative learning groups, divide up the vocabulary words, and have each group find the definitions for their assigned vocabulary words. Have the groups share their words and definitions in an online book, using a tool such as Bookemon (reviewed here). Have the groups share the online books on your interactive whiteboard or projector. If you don't have the time to complete online books, have students share the definitions using a class wiki. Do you believe that kids can change the world? What are you doing about that? If you have been thinking about involving your class in some type of community service and project based learning, but need some direction, DoSomething.org is a phenomenal place to "shop" around for ideas. Perhaps you may want to start by showing the film, Pay It Forward, or with a writing prompt, "If you were given time in school to come up with one idea that could be put into action right now by people your age that would make this school or this community a better place, what would it be and how would you put your plan into action?" Have students share ideas in small groups, then introduce them to DoSomething.org by projecting it on your classroom whiteboard or projector, viewing some of the short videos, and using the power of the internet to empower them to act now. Challenge students to collect Internet resources for their cause using Wakelet, reviewed here, where they can add a cover image, background, collaborate with others, and chose the layout they prefer. Next, enhance learning by asking your students to create an interactive infographic using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, to explain their ideas about their cause and how they would put their plan into action. Club advisers, school counselors, and teachers of gifted can use the empowering resources of this site to inspire students to ACT.

It discusses the time period, the Gothic novel genre, and the background to the novel itself. Each section offers review for students then interactive quizzes to test themselves. Since this is a British site, the word "revise" is used in place of what Americans call "review."

The sample question takes students through a step-by-step writing of an outline for an essay. Although this site is archived the links and videos still work. Introducing a novel by helping the students understand the time period and customs that are so different from their own can generate interest as well as create a mood for kids about to the read the novel. Marriage and the role of women and class in Austen's novel often make her books inaccessible to many of today's teenagers. However, this site gives enough background to whet the interest. It includes information and interactive questions on plot, characters, themes, as well as a sample essay question and answer. Be aware, this site was created by the BBC; "revise" means the same as "review" to Americans.

Although nothing can replace the specialized knowledge of a teacher-librarian, this collection of books and activities was created by an experienced elementary library/media specialist for fall read alouds and class discussions as Halloween and "mystery season" bring a chill to the air. Of course, you will need electronic copies of student work to easily copy/paste! Plagiarism Checker provides links to web-based text similar to that being searched. Note that this tool does not check against print material, such as books. It searches only the web for similar passages.

In the Classroom
Students can use this plagiarism checker to be sure they are turning in original work. Teachers can use this service to check the work of students (submitted electronically). Students should create accounts with their parents to check their work at home. Model this site to explain what plagiarism IS and how students can avoid it. The hands-on experience will help them understand this challenging concept. You might even want to provide several examples of plagiarized writing as an exercise for student to check and correct before they copy/paste their way to trouble in a research assignment. The Library of Congress created this extensive site, which uses archival images and texts to provide background and context for a multi-part study unit on To Kill A Mockingbird. The entire project takes four to five weeks, but the unit can be subdivided into smaller components. If this book is in your syllabus, this site is well worth a visit.
