This is the official website for the first math museum in the United States that opened in 2012. Currently, there are several videos from their "Math Encounters" presentations that help bring math to life. Topics include Symmetry, Art and Illusion, the Geometry of Origami, Geometric Sculpture Barn Raising, and more. One fascinating portion of the site is Math Monday - a weekly column discussing fun, experiential mathematics topics. Previous topics include shadow folds, cut and fold Escher, and pencil star.

In the Classroom
Use activities from Math Monday during Math nights or competitions at school. Challenge students to choose one of the activities to create while discovering math concepts such as symmetry and angles. Show videos from Math Encounters to students on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) as supplements to classroom activities. Have older students create projects found on the site, then share and create them with younger students. Share the site with the art teacher and work together to have students create mathematical art projects.

This site offers well over 1000 logic puzzles to solve online. Puzzles are searchable by genre, level of difficulty, author, and date. Difficulty levels range from 1 to 5 stars with 5 stars being the most difficult. Over 50 different types of puzzles are included from Sudoku, Battleship, Disconnect Four, and Diamonds. When searching by genre there is a link explaining the puzzle type included under that heading. Membership in the site is free and not necessary to solve puzzles; however, members can see puzzles they have already solved, statistics, and perhaps most interesting - can create their own puzzles to upload to the site. Membership does not require an email address.

MrNussbaum.com was developed on the idea that crucial concepts, themes, ideas, and fact sets taught in the classroom can be enhanced online through interactivity. Furthermore, teachers need a reliable K-8 website for use in the computer lab or classroom that likely covers one or more themes currently being taught. The Math portion of the site contains dozens of interactives labeled by grade level and topic. Directly below the links to all topics offered on the site, there is a color-coded display to help identify grade-level activity suggestions. For example, red for 1st Grade, orange for 2nd, and so on. Many different topics are offered, including fact practice, estimation, rounding, fractions, decimals, money, time, coordinate grids, metric and standard units, and more. Many of the games offer an introductory video explaining how to play. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. Some activities require a name; Mr. Nussbaum recommends that students never use their actual names but make up a name. Names are not stored, and a login isn't required to play.

Make math engaging for students with strong visual/spatial interests. This site would be perfect for exploring on an interactive whiteboard. Use this site to introduce fractals, African art, mathematicians, or forms found in architecture. This TED video gives a wonderful explanation of his background and exploration of cultural uses of mathematics in their architecture and art, and make for a wonderful introduction. View the video as a class, and allow students to explore the site independently, allowing time for experimenting with the included applets. As students complete project, ask them to share their learning using Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here, to create a website, video or presentation. Also consider asking students to use Genially, reviewed here, to create interactive images of completed projects. Be sure to preview the games before sharing them with the class to ensure the one you want to use is still available. Nearly every subject is included. Simply click on your grade level (K-6+) and find what is available under language arts, math, and other subjects. Specific topics range from basic typing activities to creating word clouds to grammar games (at all levels) and so much more. The interactives are teacher approved and offer colorful and attention grabbing ways for learning. Opportunities for sharing on Facebook, tweeting, and sharing on social bookmarking sites are incorporated. This is a MUST SEE site for elementary teachers looking for some great practice sites for basic skills!

This site is a tutorial that models fractions with number lines or circles through several different options. Applets are divided into categories such as identify fractions, rename fractions, compare fractions, investigate fractions, and much more. Each category contains different options for exploration with flash applets to practice that skill. The "investigate" option offers step-by-step explanations of the different categories and would be very useful to offer students when reviewing skills such as comparing fractions and using order of operations. Some of the slide shows are also available in PDF form along with practice worksheets. Another component of the site allows you to input your own fractions to practice your own examples.

Choose sample problems using the options on the right of the screen, from categories such as algebra concepts and expressions, simplifying or factoring polynomials, vectors, and much more. After creating a problem, select "solve" to find an answer. One major downfall of the site is that the option to see the steps needed to answer the problem leads to a pay site. However, the site is still worthwhile for students to check problem solutions.

At the beginning of a unit, display the site on your interactive whiteboard or projector showing the solution to a new problem, and then allow students to investigate and discover how to find the answer. WiseMapping is a free online mind-mapping and graphic-organizer tool that allows users to create visual diagrams to organize ideas, plan projects, study concepts, and solve problems. Users can build concept maps, brainstorming webs, flowcharts, and task organizers using an easy drag-and-drop interface. Maps can include notes, links, images, and attached documents, making them useful for classroom instruction, collaborative planning, research projects, and personal organization. Finished maps can be shared by URL or embedded into websites and learning management systems, allowing students and teachers to collaborate and present ideas visually across a variety of subjects and grade levels.

In the Classroom
Users must be able to navigate the icons for editing and creating a mindmap. Icons and commands are the same as in any office and free applications that most people use. View the free demo for an introduction of using Wisemapping. Use the demo editor to play with the tools and learn what they do. Note: the demo function does not allow you to save your creation as it is a sandbox area for learning. Allow students an opportunity to learn to play first without teacher direction as each person will find different ways to use wisemapping for their best benefit. Click on a set of words to edit the words, color, font, etc. in the bubble. Drag items easily around the screen by clicking and dragging the icon to drop into a new configuration. Add "icons" and flags anywhere on your mindmap. Add a "note" to a bubble anywhere. The note appears like a little sticky note on the bubble and expands when clicked on. Add a "link" to any of the text on the wisemap that leads to any link on the web you specify. Export as a scalable vector graphic (svg), PDF document, or image file. "Share" to work collaboratively with others. Users must have a login in order to share and publish. Click on the "history" of a wisemap to view the contributions of others.Assign sections of current curriculum topic to groups of students to map out and explain in detail. Link to outside web pages and pictures and create notes with additional study hints and information. Assign a different group to review information for accuracy and add additional information and explanations. Using this process, a wisemap of a chapter or unit can be created easily and efficiently while benefiting all learners.
There are countless possibilities at this mental mapping site. Demonstrate the activity on an interactive whiteboard or projector, and then allow students to try to create their own graphic organizers. Use this site for literature activities, research projects, social studies, or science topics of study. Use this site to create family trees. Have students collaborate together (online) to create group mind maps or review charts before tests on a given topic. Have students organize any concepts you study; color-code concepts to show what they understand, wonder, question; map out a story, plotline, or LIFETIME; map out a step-by-step process (life cycle); map a real historical event as a choose-your-own-adventure with alternate endings based on pivotal points; plan a "tour" for a "thought museum." Use this mapping website as an alternative to a traditional test, quiz, or homework assignment in literature or social studies: have students demonstrate their understanding by completing a graphic organizer about the main points. Be sure that they RENAME it before they start work to an individual name so you know who did it (they could EMAIL it to you!) or have them print their results to turn in.

This site, created by the Kennedy Center, offers a wealth of interactive lesson plans for grades K-12 dealing with a variety of topics, all with an "arts" spin. Some examples of topics include Native Americans, Civil War, Shakespeare, myths, melodrama, adjectives, monsters, baseball, and countless others! Be sure to check out the category "Featured Resources" There are many interactive lessons: some with video, audio, or slideshows. The lessons provide an estimate of time required and complete, step-by-step instructions. There are printables included with some of the lessons.

In the Classroom
Search this site for a topic that you are teaching in your class. Share the lesson on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Better yet, make the video or slideshow a learning station for students to watch in small groups. This site is so wonderful and HUGE, that after students are one with the resources you have for them, you may want to allow them to explore on independently or in small groups for a specific interest of theirs.

This site offers many opportunities for math exploration for both teachers and students. Although they have a store and ads on the site, much of the site is free and worth a visit. One especially helpful portion of the site is the link to different types of calculators from basic to graphing to mortgage and loan calculators. Students and parents will find the homework section of the site helpful as it is categorized by different topics, then each topic is further divided into sections. For example, under fractions you will find definitions, reducing, adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing. In each of those portions there is a section with a first glance (overview), in-depth, examples, and workout. There is also a unit quiz for each section. Another helpful area of the site is the practice section which offers practice in many different math skills such as square root, percent, and integers. The games section offers practice with critical thinking skills through logic puzzles and games such as chess.
