This site is for the curious student who wants to investigate how some of America's most enduring inventions from the 19th and 20th centuries came to be. Browse through pencil-and-ink industrial drawings of shopping carts, Crayola crayons, T-shirts, and more. A useful resource for gaining insight into American culture and the creative process.

tag(s): 20th century (168), creativity (85), drawing (57), inventors and inventions (88)

In the Classroom

Use the images on this site to compliment a lecture on the inventions of the 20th century. While the test is interesting, it might be a little much for a class for of lower-level readers. Include the images as a way to capture the simplicity of original designs, and compare the initial plans of these inventions to the mega-products they are today. The images are interesting, particularly the Crayola tests, and will capture kids attention as they are inventions that have impacted their own lives in a big way.

This fabulous collection of lesson plans, activities, and web links from NCTM is a professional treasury for math teachers. The two menu selections at the top, Lessons and Interactives, are actually drop down menus to find lessons by grade levels, Brain Teasers, Mobile Apps, a Web Sketchpad, and more. The interactives are a challenging practice for concepts ranging from basic fractions and graphing to congruence theorems. Narrow your search with keywords. Each activity includes a description and grade level recommendation. Highlighted activities and Lessons on the home page change often. Many lesson plans also include technology links, but others are low-tech or no-tech. Illuminations is created by NCTM.

Keep this one in your professional favorites to find supporting technology for any math concept. As you find practice or extension ideas for student use or at home reinforcement, share specific links on your class web page or classroom computer center for students to access independently or as you assign them for needed practice. The full site is overwhelming for most parents, so share the specific areas that fit your curriculum.

This interactive chart illustrates the discovery of Greek mathematician Eratosthenes, who recognized that to find all prime numbers between two and some larger number, it is necessary to remove ALL multiples of each number between them. To watch a visual illustration of this concept, click on each consecutive number, starting with two, and watch as multiples are eliminated. Eventually, all prime numbers between 2 and 400 will be highlighted in red. Sounds complicated, but this is a fascinating site to project in the classroom as prime numbers are introduced and discussed.

Real life applications of math are explored through a collection of activities that engage student in learning about architecture. Skills involving estimation, measurement, proportion, and ratios combine as students draft a "to-scale" floor plan of their classroom. The site provides sample plans, instructions on using computer software to complete the activity, and a collection of links to other Web resources on architecture and mathematics. Related activities involve finding geometric shapes in buildings, designing a bedroom, and using a virtual 3-D model of Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water home to estimate surface area and volume. Visit the Teacher Notes for downloadable lesson plans, ideas, and reviews of the site. Links to standards are included.
