Some topics are for primary grades (such as the count aloud and sequence activities). Other topics are more complex (such as factorization and equations). Specific topics include base 10, counting, sequence, ordinals, odd and even numbers, place value, addition, equations, subtraction, integers, number line, Venn diagrams, algebra, factorization, cuisennaire rods, and others. What a fabulous resource for any elementary math class.

Although this website appears to offer a simple list of lesson plans, it is a "diamond in the rough." All of the lesson plans relate to the same standard, students will expand number sense to include integers and perform operations with whole numbers, simple fractions, and decimals. Specific lesson plans include, "How Much is a Million," "Multiplication Strategy Review," "Partial Quotient," "Mixed Number/Improper Fraction Review," "Playground Measurement," and "Fraction Track."
All lesson plans are extremely detailed and provide standards, material lists, step-by-step instructions, interactive elements, links, printable pages, and more. Some of the links require JAVA. Get it from the Teachers First Toolbox page. All grade levels from K through Calculus available.

This website is truly a rare find - combining math and reading skills. Although the main page is aesthetically plain, the activities are very challenging. Most are set up as word problems that require reading, comprehension, and math skills. The "outline math problems" provide students with 3-5 choices. You click the blank, and the answer choices are provided. There are activities for primary grades (such as basic addition practice) as well as advanced activities for secondary grades (such as geometry concepts). Many of the activities require JAVA. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page..
In the Classroom
These activities are perfect for an interactive whiteboard (or projector). You could also provide a link to this website in your class newsletter or on your class web page. There are links for students, teachers, and parents. This resource provides excellent introduction lesson plans and highly creative games and activities. Be warned - this website does have some advertisements, but the content is wonderful. Exercise your gray matter by solving one of the 12,000 'braingles' at this site. It purports to be the largest collection of puzzles, riddles, mind games, etc, on the Internet. Once you explore the site, you trust their word. The site is mobile phone and wii-friendly. Don't miss the section with SAT vocab (in Mentalrobics). There are articles on study skills and strategies such as clearing your mind before studying, "chunking" when reading, or various strategies to memorize material. Engage students into math and reading exercises through the endless riddles and puzzles at this site. They won't even be aware they are 'reading' or 'solving math.'

Site creators claim the entire site is family-friendly, safe for classroom use. Portions of the site require membership, and the membership level that displays ads is free. You may want to set up a CLASS account and use it under controlled circumstances since there are forums and chat rooms, however. This challenging and interactive website has Lateral puzzles, both "active" and "solved." Registration is required if you guess an answer to one of the "active" puzzles. Registration is not necessary for reading the puzzles and clues. This site gives a lateral puzzle, and then the readers can ask questions to the original poster. Some of the "solved" puzzles could be used with younger students. However, the site is geared towards middle school and high school aged students.

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Companion, created by author Annette Whipple, is a richly detailed blog dedicated to exploring the pioneer world behind the beloved Little House books. In its popular "Live Like Laura" section, visitors can discover hands-on activities, period recipes, crafts, and pioneer living tips rooted in Wilder's life. The site also offers free printables, trivia, book discussions, guides to Little House homesites and museums, and resources to complement a chapter-by-chapter study of Wilder's works, making it a wonderful tool for educators and fans alike.

Use an interactive whiteboard or projector to introduce your students to the lovely Laura Ingalls Wilder. After introducing the site, ask students to read parts of the blog in pairs or small groups. This very simple site, created by an anonymous puzzle-lover, is a treasury for logic problems and lateral thinking puzzles to use in your classroom or beyond. Click on the puzzle type you want. Use them as brain warm-ups in a math or science class before venturing into problem-solving or inquiry process or simply to engage the brains before starting any activity. There are different levels of logic and different types of lateral thinking puzzles, each with a hint before revealing the complete answer. These puzzles would also be useful for gifted enrichment.
In the Classroom
If you don't have time to spend on these in class as often as you would like, print out a single lateral thinking or logic problem each week for your bulletin board and let the students argue about it all week. Or include this link on your teacher website for the students to access outside of class.
