Students can brainstorm health and nutrition concerns among their class and then work in groups to obtain information and dispel myths. Students can survey their class or school to obtain information on what students their age know. Have groups present information to the class learned through the survey and research on the site. Additionally, students can create a newsletter for the class, school, or community or publish information to a wiki or blog. Students can also create a goal for personal wellness and health. Their action plan can use relevant facts and information from this site. Bring the spirit of the games into your classroom! These nicely designed lesson plans, organized by grade level, address topics including characteristics of the ancient games, national anthems and customs, and women in the Olympic arena. Fun Olympic facts, information on health and exercise, and creative activities for learning about life in ancient Greece are also provided. Although these activities were originally created for the 2004 Olympics, nearly all of the information is applicable to any year of Olympic events (specifically, the summer Olympics). Some of the lesson plans and other activities require Adobe Acrobat. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.
In the Classroom
Use this information to enhance your Olympic unit. The lesson plans and activities require very little preparation. This Exploratorium Science of Baseball website uses interactive activities, articles, and features to explore the science behind baseball. Students can investigate why curveballs curve, what makes the "sweet spot" on a bat, test their reaction time to a fastball, and try hands-on experiments like comparing ball bounces. Alongside engaging science content on the game's physics, biology, and tools, the site also includes historical and contextual articles that connect key concepts to the real sport.
In the Classroom
After reading about the bat's sweet spot, students can design a simple hands-on experiment with rulers or dowels to test vibration and energy transfer, then connect findings back to the website. Have students test their reaction time using the site's interactive activities and record their results on Padlet, reviewed here to determine if they can see a pattern. In the Classroom
They look great printed on brightly colored paper! As an opening day activity, challenge small groups of students to interpret the quote hanging closest to them and predict how it may be important in your course this year. For younger students, ask them to write a paraphrase or to illustrate the quote. Be sure to change the quotes periodically and give a prize to the first student who notices. Or give a pop-quiz during the last week of school, asking students to recall as many of the year's quotes as they can (working in small groups will probably help). If you have classroom blogs, ask students to choose and reflect on a specific quote and its relevance to your class throughout the past year.

The body of the page has several helpful categories, such as Bulletin Boards, Skills and Fitness Challenges, Adapted PE, and others. There is more here than can be absorbed in one sitting, so be sure to bookmark this site. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If you district blocks YouTube they may not be viewable.
