In the Classroom

Use a class PastBook account to keep track of the day-to-day happenings in your classroom (especially for younger grades). Consider creating albums of specific events such as field trips, service projects, hands-on activities, field experiences such as watershed studies, and more. Have students create portfolios for art and photography classes. Create a magazine of photos that portray different history and social topics. Set the scenes for novels or stories. Explain a specific science concept (using Creative Commons images AND proper credit). Anywhere photos can be used to showcase achievement or explain a concept, this service would be an excellent resource. Learning support, speech, ENL/ESL, autistic support, or world language teachers can collect images into "magazines" for students to practice/develop speech and vocabulary.

Pause and Think Online is a lesson designed to teach young students how to use the internet safely, responsibly, and respectfully. It uses a catchy song and engaging visuals featuring the Digital Citizens characters to help children understand and remember key principles of digital citizenship, such as thinking before reacting, protecting privacy, recognizing trustworthy content, being kind online, and managing device time. The lesson includes interactive activities, discussion prompts, handouts, and take-home resources to help students reflect on their use of technology. Use this lesson as a short 15 to 25-minute session or extend it into a whole-class session, depending on your schedule. If your district blocks YouTube, then the video may not be viewable.

Teach students a simple hand-motion routine that matches the song's ideas (pause, think, protect, be kind). Use it as a warm-up before any digital activity to reinforce safe choices. Show a sample webpage or classroom-safe site, and model pausing and thinking before clicking. Students can then practice in partners, explaining their choices aloud. Give students picture cards of the Digital Citizens characters and brief online scenarios. Have them match each scenario to the character who would give the best advice, just like in the lesson.

Have students research their classmates' needs, design a small improvement (e.g., a class jobs system, a reading nook layout, noise-level agreements), and present their ideas. In the Classroom

Watch the news together on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Allow students to watch independently on laptops or at a learning station. Use any video or article as a current events writing prompt. Challenge students to create blog posts about them. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, replace pen and paper and have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Webnode, reviewed here. Don't forget the many free lesson plans (already aligned to Common Core standards). Click on the Lesson Plans link to explore the countless topics available (Poetry, Veterans, Elections, Ebola, Civil Rights, and more). For articles and videos about conflicts and tension, extend student learning by having your students engage in a debate using a tool such as Kialo Edu, reviewed here. Keep your class up-to-date on the news using this site. Provide this link on your class website for students (and families) to access both in and out of your classroom.

Help students connect classroom learning to unfolding events with ready-to-go news lessons for grades 6-12. PBS NewsHour Classroom regularly posts lessons built around current reporting in civics, social studies, English language arts, science, STEM, and arts and culture. Teachers can search by topic or keyword, and individual entries commonly include a video report, a concise summary, discussion prompts, background information, media-literacy questions, and extension activities. The collection is especially useful for morning meetings, current-events routines, substitute plans, and timely additions to an existing unit. Because the subject matter follows the news, teachers should preview each lesson for sensitive topics, political content, violence, or other material that may require context for a particular class.

In the Classroom

Ask students to identify who, what, where, when, and why in a current-events story, then post their findings on Padlet, reviewed here, to create a whole-class news briefing. Invite students to take opposing positions on a civic or policy question raised by a lesson, prepare evidence-based arguments, and use Mentimeter, reviewed here, to collect an anonymous vote before and after the debate. Have students write and record a two-minute news analysis with Adobe Podcast, reviewed here, explaining the event, why it matters, and which evidence supports their interpretation.

Take advantage of the many free activities on this site; be sure to share with parents for ideas on learning at home. Consider having a "summer" day in the middle of winter as you enjoy summer activities in the warmth of the indoors. Share with parents at the end of the school year as a great resource for learning during the summer months.
