The American Foundation for the Blind has created Braille Bug to explain Braille - what it is and how it works - to the sighted world. This site would be a great introduction for students who have family, friends, or classmates who are blind. There's a very complete introduction to the Braille alphabet, along with a printable Braille letter guide.

tag(s): alphabet (46), disabilities (37), hearing impaired (8), vision (40)

In the Classroom

This would also be a great stop in a study of disabilities and adaptive strategies.

An interdisciplinary unit for second graders dealing with "blue themes" in literature. The unit uses Blueberries for Sal, Jamberry, and several other books to build "blue" connections. This lesson plan was one of the winners in a lesson plan contest sponsored by TeachersFirst. TeachersFirst editors have added technology options where appropriate.

In the Classroom

This collection of "blue" activities gives teachers many choices. You may even want to invite some parents in to help with some of them, especially if students use the computer to create projects.

This Internet Archive item provides free access to an 1895 edition of Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage: An Episode of the American Civil War. The link opens the book near page 64 in a two-page reader, and users can turn pages, zoom in on the original scans, search the OCR-generated text, or download the book in formats including PDF, EPUB, and plain text. A DAISY option is also available for eligible users with print disabilities. No account is needed to read or download the book, although JavaScript must be enabled for the full browser-based reader. Because this is a scan of a historical edition, the typography and automated transcription may be less accessible than a modern classroom edition, and OCR errors are possible. The novel depicts combat, fear, injury, death, and the psychological effects of war, so teachers should preview assigned passages and provide historical context. The item page includes sharing tools, user reviews, donation prompts, and links to other Internet Archive collections.

Have students closely read a selected passage and annotate details that reveal Henry Fleming's thoughts, fears, and changing understanding of courage. Ask pairs to sort quotations into categories such as internal conflict, external conflict, imagery, irony, and character development, then defend their choices with textual evidence. Students can use Trading Card Creator, reviewed here, to design a character card that identifies Henry's motivations, conflicts, defining choices, and supporting quotations.
