VOA Learning English provides audio and written news stories designed specifically for English language learners. Content covers topics including world news, science, health, education, culture, and U.S. history, using simplified vocabulary and a slower speaking pace to support comprehension. Many stories include interactive features like short videos, listening activities, quizzes, vocabulary support, pronunciation models, and an integrated "Word Book" dictionary. Audio and video content can be streamed directly on the site, making it a flexible resource for classroom listening practice, language development, and current-events instruction. If your district blocks YouTube, then the videos may not be viewable.
This site includes advertising.

tag(s): agriculture (54), communication (122), cultures (290), news (223), vocabulary (251)

In the Classroom

Play a short VOA Learning English video from the site or YouTube, then have students read the matching article to compare how information is presented in spoken versus written form. Assign students a short video or article and have them identify new words using the built-in Word Book. Students can create sentence cards or mini glossaries using the vocabulary in new contexts. Use science, health, or history-based VOA videos to launch short research extensions, discussions, or opinion writing tied to social studies or science standards.

Through hands-on, interactive games and animations, this site tackles subjects that are often considered too advanced for elementary students and presents them simply and concisely.A la carte style menu lets you pick and choose subject areas that relate to your classroom. You can even download a Spaceplace podcast. A Spanish version of the full site is available.

There is a special section for teachers that offers printable pictures for the classroom and classroom activities. Use the menus or search function to find extenxsion topics for your regular curriculum, such as "What Batteries Will Last Until Your Old Age?" when studying electricity, and share them on a projector or as a classroom center during that unit. Encourage budding scientists by making this site available on your classroom computer all the time or sharing it on your teacher web site. Play the Space Place Musings podcast as students wait for their bus. The full site provides enrichment or home activities for kids and parents, too.

Wally Ant leads students on a tour of six simple machines (lever, wheel and axel, pulley, wedge, inclined plane, and screw). The tour includes vocabulary used with simple machines. Movies and examples show examples that students see in everyday life. The movies have no sound, just video you can play over and over. This site requires reading skills, so partner someone with non-readers if students are navigating it on their own.

Here's a complete curriculum for schools interested in starting a school garden. Created in California, teachers in other regions will likely need to make some adjustments to some of the materials, but the site contains extensive resources for teachers to use in constructing their own lessons based on the gardening experience.

tag(s): plants (141)

In the Classroom

There are some great interdisciplinary opportunities here, but teachers will need to work thoughtfully to adapt the raw materials to local circumstances. Consider sharing information from this site with your school's parent/teacher organization to gain support and possible funding for a garden project. Gardening is a perfect topic for student blogs. Have students replace paper and pencil journals and use Edublog, reviewed here, to share the progress of their gardens including images and journal entries.

If you want the assignment online, explain to students they need to open a new tab in their browser window and take notes with a tool such as Memo Notepad, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Conclude this lesson by having small groups of students click on "Active Zone" and choose one of the creative, hands-on activities to bring into your classroom and demonstrate on an assigned day (they'll love the cream-filled cookie one!).
