This website provides numerous teacher-created PowerPoints. Some of the presentations are excellent, while others are just mediocre. The range of topics goes from astronomy, to history, to French and much, much more! There is something good here for every classroom. You MUST have PowerPoint software (not free) to be able to download and edit the shows.

In the Classroom

Use the small blue buttons to find your subject(s). This site is great for finding/sharing an interactive whiteboard activity or projected lesson. This highly creative website combines the periodic table with actual comics. There are comic strip stories for all (or nearly all) of the elements. This website offers a new approach to teach a complex subject! A favorite aspect of this approach is that they include both recent comics and comics from over 50 years ago. This website presents basic scientific information in a fun and student-friendly manner. Connect to your students' "prior knowledge" of comic books to hook them on chemistry.

tag(s): elements (32), latin (23), periodic table (49)

In the Classroom

Get an interactive whiteboard and utilize this excellent website to help your students better comprehend the periodic table. These comics are packed with knowledge and fun to use! You will certainly want to include it on your teacher web page for studens to explore outside of class time.

The Air Quality Flag Program provides instructions for organizations to display colored flags daily that indicate the current air quality. Begin with "Start Your Flag Program" to find the four steps to get started. Although there is a link to purchase flags, participating programs can create their own flags using cloth or vinyl, or even a digital display on classroom whiteboards. Use the available link to create a custom widget for your class site. This site also includes lesson plans, activity books, and school resources.

tag(s): air (27), environment (253), pollution (55)

Work together to create monthly air quality graphs using Data GIF Maker, reviewed here, then ask students to analyze the data. Consider asking students to create weekly podcasts that review the week's weather and air quality and include their predictions for the upcoming week. Adobe Podcast, reviewed here includes free tools for creating and sharing podcasts. As an alternative to a podcast for younger students, use Animate from Audio, reviewed here to create short animated films with students' voice recordings.

Use Google Drive to create and save your Google Docs. With Google Docs, you can create, edit, reformat, upload, and share documents you've created in WORD or other office applications. You can also look at the editing history. Click the "New" button to create new folders, slides, sheets, and forms, and click the "more" button to see lots more. Perhaps the best feature is the ability to collaborate on documents and spreadsheets with anyone or with a selected group. Groups share editing capabilities, making collaboration much easier. You can publish newly created, uploaded, downloaded, or revised documents and spreadsheets, as well as make links to them on personal blogs. Easy directions and familiar-looking pages make exporting and importing documents simple; Google also helps keep you organized.

tag(s): editing (90), slides (37), spreadsheets (21), Storage (7)

A "tour" and simple-to-understand directions make this site easy to use. Have your students set up collaborative groups for projects, lab data, and more. Or set them up yourself, giving them specific passwords to access their "space." Help your gifted students stay organized (and collaborate) using this tool. Users are normally invited to "join" via an email message. This may be problematic for many schools that do not permit student email access on school premises. Note that notifications sent by Google Docs may also land in "junk mail" folders or be blocked by spam filters. We suggest that you experiment with a small group of students to determine what will work in your particular situation. One option is to set up the groups with the teacher as a "member" but have students work from home, using their personal email addresses, for group projects. Make sure you are protecting the safety of student work and identity, and that you are in compliance with your school's Acceptable Use Policy. Anything students can do on a single computer, they can do collaboratively on Google Docs, accessing their work from any online computer.

This website provides a lesson plan that was designed to use around Halloween. There are objectives, assessments, and standards provided. This lesson is all about throwing a "literary bash" in honor of your class's favorite piece of literature (Harry Potter is used an example). This activity is an excellent alternative to a traditional Halloween party.

tag(s): halloween (46)

In the Classroom

Use this lesson plan, and tailor it to fit your unit in almost any content area - math, english, history, science, etc. Though this lesson was intended just for Language Arts classes, most content areas also have books or common themes that this could apply to. Use this lesson plan after a test or towards the end of the year when students might need a break from the traditional classroom routines. This is a great way to make sure students get some substance of a "break" while keeping it academic! Be sure to save this as a favorite on your classroom computer to allow for easy reference later on.
