Although this site is a companion to a PBS series by the same name, many of the activities can be used independently to tap into your students deductive reasoning abilities. Prowl through the rooms of a virtual house to investigate clues and determine its age; open a time capsule to examine its contents and decide when it was originally buried; and learn about the many techniques used by historical sleuths, including forensic anthropology, DNA analysis, timber dating, and document examination. Some very creative interdisciplinary connections between science and historical research can be drawn from the resources on this site. Let your imagination run with this one!

In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free lesson plans and activities offered on this site. Some can actually be used for other subjects beyond history - for example, there is a lesson on how to interview eye-witnesses that would be useful in a writing or English class. There are also videos of the show that can pertain to a particular unit. A few exist on the civil war that would be great to play during a US history course to add more interest and intrigue to the study of the war. Use this entertaining site to help your students understand the vital role played by watersheds and the need to protect and manage this valuable resource. The resource is divided into two main sections: novice and intermediate. The novice module provides an introduction to watersheds through interactive questions. The intermediate level examines the four different watershed environments: national park, agriculture, neighborhood, and city, and enables students - in the role of land use planners - to discover how their decisions can impact stream quality.

An interactive "Changing Weather" feature asks for student input regarding local weather conditions, and then generates a personalized weather report. Use the "Our Star the Sun" link to find more than a dozen outstanding lesson plans that focus on the sun-earth system and nonfiction reading and writing skills. Downloadable worksheets and materials are also provided in either GIF or PDF formats.

Astronomical history is about to happen! On June 8, 2004 the planet Venus will cross the face of the sun, an event that has not occurred since 1882. Tune into this site to view a live Internet webcast of the transit and an interactive timeline detailing Venus transits throughout history (only six have occurred since the invention of the telescope in the 1600s). Basic information on what a transit it, why it is important, and how to see it is also provided. Some areas of this resource require Flash, however there is plenty of important information to learn from that doesn't.

Life science teachers can find a wide variety of information about many aspects of the natural world in this well-organized site. Topics include geology, plants, fungi, animals, and naming/classifying living things. A section on "tools" provides guidance in selecting the proper items for successful nature study (i.e., field guides, binoculars, notebooks). Most importantly, all of the information is geared toward understanding nature in your own backyard (or schoolyard!). Encourage your students to check out the link to 101 Nature-Oriented Things to Do for some great science-based ideas on how to fill those long summer days.

Turn every student's favorite class distraction into a learning opportunity with this lesson that takes a scientific look at the standard paper airplane. Instructions on how to properly fold an aircraft are provided (not that your students will need those!), but then the challenge begins. Structural adjustments to improve performance are discussed, the paper's function in the construction process is examined, and basic flight concepts are explained. Pair this activity with a study of the Wright Brothers and the history of flight, or with an environmental lesson on paper recycling.
In the Classroom
This site would be great for a physics unit discussing the aerodynamics of flight. Have a team competition in which students use the site on an interactive whiteboard to create the best paper planes they can, considering the scientific processes that go into flight. In the Classroom
Use the videos on this site as a supplement to a lecture on microbes. One video that would be great, "E. Coli Animation," shows the growth and reproduction of e.coli in a quick YouTube clip. Not all school internet systems allow for access to YouTube, so make sure to check your school's policies before use. If it does work, some of these videos do a great job of detailing specific microbes and their life-cycles. The "Cosmic Q's and A's" link uses text and video to explain what actually goes on in space. Browse through a collection of on-line, interactive games including "Moon Pong" and "Crazy Asteroid," listen to Monty Python's "Galaxy Song" (it IS educational!), and try out some of the experiments patterned after those performed on space missions. This is fun and educational site that can add a unique dimension to a lesson on space exploration.
