This lesson is all about throwing a "literary bash" in honor of your class's favorite piece of literature (Harry Potter is used an example). This activity is an excellent alternative to a traditional Halloween party.

Use this lesson plan, and tailor it to fit your unit in almost any content area - math, english, history, science, etc. Though this lesson was intended just for Language Arts classes, most content areas also have books or common themes that this could apply to. Use this lesson plan after a test or towards the end of the year when students might need a break from the traditional classroom routines. This is a great way to make sure students get some substance of a "break" while keeping it academic! Bring history to life through short Readers Theater performances focused on Christopher Columbus and Columbus Day. This Readers Theater All Year collection includes three scripts for grades 3-8, including a shortened version with readability levels of 4.2 and 3.0, a public-school version with a 4.4 readability level, and a private-school version with a 4.4 readability level. The scripts place students in roles connected with Columbus's voyage and provide opportunities for oral reading, fluency practice, performance, and discussion. Two selections are tagged for grades 3-5, while the private-school selection is also tagged for grades 6-8. Two scripts are part of the site's Script Buffet collection, while the private-school version is identified as a free script. Because the selections present Columbus through historical and patriotic narratives, teachers may want to pair them with primary sources and Indigenous perspectives so students can examine multiple viewpoints and historical interpretations.

We could claim that this site made the cut because it has recipes from all over the world. Frankly, we liked it because we suspect every classroom needs a good cookie recipe at this time of year. This site has dozens of tempting recipes you may want to try. Try mixing the recipes with some of the international customs described in the sites at Christmas Traditions Worldwide, reviewed here, or Christmas Around the World, reviewed here.

While no one doubts the religious significance of Christmas, the origin of many of the customs associated with the holiday is lost in legend. These pages sort out the origins of some of these customs and symbols in instructive fashion. Are poinsettias poisonous? Where did the Yule Log come from? Find out here... and note that not all legends are appropriate for all ages - read first, then use. Although this site has dated information, it is a great resource to learn about Christmas legends.

A nice basic site with an easy-to-follow history, and explanation of the Menorah, and some songs and crafts. There are directions for and an explanation of the dreidel game -- kids can also sing along to the song "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel," and even spin a virtual dreidel (you must have or download RealVideo software first, which is available from the site). You can also print out a pattern to make your own dreidel, or print out Chanuka pictures to color for wrapping paper. Though a few of the activities require FLASH, there is a great deal of information on this site that doesn't.
In the Classroom
Recommend this site to parents who are looking for holiday activities to do with their families! Within the classroom, this site would be excellent on a unit on world religions in either world history or cultural geography. During a study of Judaism, use this site on the interactive whiteboard or projector as an activator or introduction. Use this site to connect your students with people from other generations and geographic locations. Turn up your speakers and listen to some examples in your classroom. You can even use the story collection site as a model to start your own oral history project for your class or the entire school. You may not want to actually place your recording on the NPR site but instead house it locally on your school or community website. As major events occur in your community, such as an anniversary or the opening of a new school, engage your students in documenting the event. The general interview guides also offer useful interview techniques for school newspapers or news broadcasts.

There is an interactive time line, excellent graphics on the physics of the atom bomb, biographies of major characters in the story and good teacher resources including lesson plans. This site might be useful to both science and social studies teachers. The graphics on the physics of the atom bomb are great, but the historical context setting and discussion is also excellent. There are links to WebQuests, and information about California state standards met by the lesson plans.

ERIC was a government-sponsored clearinghouse for educational resources that has recently lost funding. This site maintains some of the files from the ERIC database, and in this case, focuses on resources relative to the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. It includes some very helpful suggestions for explaining this process to students and placing it in a larger context of civil rights, immigration, and the study of World War II.
