In the Classroom
Incorporate these lesson plans and more with any of your environmental studies. Have students complete a graphic organizer as a pre- and post-assessment on what they know about lead and lead contamination. A KWL chart works well. As you work through the unit, ask students to write about how to apply the ideas in this curricular unit on the environment and health to their own home lives. There are several Modules here to choose from. Select a few for small groups in your class to explore. As students explore, have them take notes with an online tool like Simplenote, reviewed here, have them share the info they learned with their small group. Tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Make sure students compare notes and fill in their own with important information they may have missed. Simple note allows you to access and update across all devices. Take this a step further and challenge students to share their learning with the rest of their classmates and create a multimedia presentation using Sway, reviewed here. Sway offers tools to easily create professsional looking presentations, brochures, interactive posters, and newsletters. Use the images from this site to contribute to a class visual discovery based on the economic situation of China. Most of the images are representative of the free markets thriving in major cities, making it easy to compare and contrast with what students have seen in the US. Select 3-5 of the more stimulating images, placing them in a powerpoint presentation. Show students the slides via interactive whiteboard/projector, with students writing down what they can observe & infer about each image. After the display is complete, have a class discussion based on student findings. If teaching about the historic 1960 television debates, use the videos and transcripts to provide students with something more tangible than the summary in their textbook. Click on the debate history section of the site, selecting the year 1960. There are multiple transcripts and videos that can easily be printed or viewed on the interactive whiteboard. To show the impact of technology, have students listen to the debate before watching - and also select a winner. After, have students repeat the activity; this time through watching the video. Have a class discussion on how seeing the candidates affected their opinions, and whether a similar effect occurred in 1960.
