Use this site to add something tangible to the study of Africa. While there is an abundance of informational text, what is really great about this site are the audio files embedded with in each section. There are files of African music, professors talking, geologists, politicians, etc - all exhibiting the importance of African per historical era. The Africa Maps section of the Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection provides a large selection of free, high-quality maps showing Africa's physical features, political boundaries, climate, vegetation, and historical changes. With maps from a variety of years, it is a helpful resource for comparing regions over time or supporting lessons in geography, history, culture, or research projects. Some files are large, but the clear detail makes them excellent for classroom use, student investigations, and visual analysis activities.
In the Classroom
These maps would be an excellent addition to any civics or world history class. During a unit on Africa, open one of these maps on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Keep the map up during lecture so students can understand the location of events geographically. The Smithsonian has created a colorful, if sometimes awkward, resource for studying African history, art, and culture. The site features works by African sculptors and artists, but the African history time-line is the most useful instructional component. It shows African influences in Spain, the New World, and many other places. We hope the content for these sections will expand over time. Still, this is a very useful resource for explaining the evolution and spread of African cultural elements.
In the Classroom
Share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to a unit about the slave trade in Africa or as review. The timeline begins in the 1400's with the Portuguese, and extends until the mid 1800's. What is nice about the timeline is that to access the additional information, you have to click on the specific event. Which means that before you access the event, you can test student knowledge before checking the answer in the background. The Great Plains Conservation live African wildlife webcam offers a real-time view into the daily lives of wild animals in Botswana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, streaming scenes from waterholes and plains where elephants, giraffes, hippos, lions, and a variety of other wildlife can appear at any moment. This live "hidecam" experience brings authentic African safari sights and sounds into the classroom or home, supporting observation of animal behavior, ecosystems, and biodiversity. The organization also shares additional wildlife livestreams and related videos on YouTube, making it easy to explore beyond the live feed for extended learning and classroom use.
In the Classroom
This is an excellent site to supplement a unit on Africa specifically, or one that is focused on different environments over the world. Save the site as a favorite on classroom computers, and have students look at in pairs or cooperative learning groups. Use the site to show kids how different the African country-side is from their own. Because one can not predict when or where animals will appear, it is probably best to have students check periodically through the day or classroom period. Have students observe the camera-view, and write a comparative piece on the differences between the region shown and their own. Complete with maps, damage assessment charts, and commentary by former commanders, the site chronicles the war's effect on the middle east while discussing the problems inherent in managing a limited conflict. Good starting point for a discussion of the interplay between military, political, and diplomatic interests in American foreign policy.

There's lots of information here, most of it in the form of text. There are also maps, images, and the like. The site is particularly noteworthy for the depth of its content, which makes it a great starting point for on-line research.
In the Classroom
Although there may not be any current updates on this site, there is a lot of background information that could help students who need catching up do so without being singled out. Use the site as a learning center or station, clearly defining which part students should focus on. Based on what they read, have students create timelines of topics such as political rulers, battles, colonization efforts, factors leading to the fall of Rome, etc. Have students use a tool such as Preceden, reviewed here. Use the images and videos in the exhibit for a visual discovery activity. Select 3-4 images, placing them on a slide-show presentation. Have students take notes on each of the images and videos, noting what they observe, infer and predict about each one. After the presentation, have a class discussion based around student notes. This would be great review activity before an assessment, allowing students to apply the knowledge just learned. Students can participate in an artifact storytelling project by selecting an object and writing a narrative that explains its history, importance, and possible owner, helping them connect informational details with creative writing. This is an elegant Indian site describing archeological excavations at the site of Lothal, an ancient city on the Indus river. There are interactive maps, descriptions of life in the ancient city, and a catalog of artifacts found during the excavations. Beautiful quality, and a little slow as a result, but if you're looking for examples of how archaeologists work, it's worth the wait.

Use the images in this site to create a visual discovery activity during a unit on the Indus River Valley. Select 3-5 of the more powerful images, placing them in a Powerpoint presentation to be displayed over the interactive whiteboard or projector. Allow the class to view the images for 30-45 seconds each, writing down what they observe, infer and predict about each image. After all the images have been seen, start a class discussion based on student's findings.
