Teach about the earth and seasonal change as you solve a real mystery. This unique international "hide and seek" activity is interactive, easy to use, and free! The challenge begins the last week of January and continues throughout May. Each week, students are given a clue to try to locate a "Mystery Class" from somewhere around the world. All clues are seasonal and some include sunrise and sunset times. The site includes standards in science, math and geography. The site provides lesson plans, interactive activities, video clips and more. Registration is free for this 11-week adventure or you can use the resources at the website with no registration necessary. Flash is required for a very few of the activities, there is a lot of information to learn.

You may be familiar with Google Earth but may not have the ability to install their free software on your computer, either because you are not permitted to or because your computer is not powerful enough to handle it. Try Flash Earth for a simpler tool to explore the earth as you teach geography to any age from kindergarten to seniors. Perhaps you just want to quickly show which way the Conestoga wagons crossed the U.S., or maybe to show where in the world a current events story is taking place. This simple tool, on a projector or interactive whiteboard, is just the trick.
Note: You MUST have FLASH on your computer.
In the Classroom
Use a projector or whiteboard to share a location as art of the background knowledge for a lesson. Be sure to add this link to your teacher web page as a reference tool, as well. Be aware that some world locations have much "fuzzier" satellite images than others. Always preview before your lesson to be sure you can show the features you want students to see. Create photo trading cards using images you upload or store on Flickr, Instagram, or Dropbox. Imagine having your students create study aids about famous people using images they draw and scan, or photos of themselves impersonating famous people, such as presidents, explorers, authors, and more. If you celebrate reading by having an "author's tea," why not follow up by asking students to make trading cards for the authors they "met"? Use a similar approach for famous historical figures or even for geometric shapes you photograph with the digital camera. If students write their own "biographies" of the shapes to study from, they will learn for sure! They can even trade each other for favorites.

Upload and tag your photo, type information, and print cards. Download the finished card to your computer. Use for book reports for literature circles, with each student in the group making a card for a different character in the book. This is also an excellent idea for special occasions for special people: mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, school nurse, school secretary, school custodian, favorite aunt, or anyone else! Although this site is a wiki and therefore editable by anyone who chooses to change the content, it highlights the differences between cultures and how people interpret behavior. Find out about what is considered "good" and "bad" etiquette in places all over the world. Perhaps your students would even like to write their own additions?
It is worth mentioning to your secondary students that the authorship of wiki content is unknown and would therefore be unacceptable as an "academic" source.

Use this as a discussion-opener in your world language or world cultures class. If you put the Faux Pas wiki up on a projector or allow your students to explore it, assigning each group to find one thing that is perfectly acceptable in your home country but considered offensive in another, you can then discuss the differences one needs to consider in learning the language or history of that country. Another great PBS site, this one focused on the history of Texas statehood and the battle at the Alamo. here is a timeline of the early history of Texas and interviews of the Navarro family and others. The Alamo has become one of those myths that have contributed to our sense of American history, and a dose of reality about the event is important. For example, there were survivors of the battle, and some of their stories are told here.

From a recent PBS Nova episode, this site deals with the early efforts of pioneer aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Santos-Dumont had the revolutionary idea that enabling humans to fly would contribute to world peace, because people would experience a new, purer perspective on the world from above. A contemporary of the Wright Brothers, Santos-Dumont's designs influenced modern "ultralight" planes. The site includes biographical information about Santos-Dumont and a very nice slideshow of failed airplane designs. Though the video clips and the interactive view of one of Santos-Dumont's planes showing its features requires flash, there is still plenty to learn here about early flight and Alberto Santos-Dumont. Under the teacher's guide, a classroom activity provides plans for various paper airplane designs that illustrate principles of aerodynamics.
In the Classroom
Flying has always fascinated us, and flying failures are sometimes more interesting than successes. Students will know all about the Wright Brothers; they are unlikely to have heard of Alberto Santos-Dumont. The interactives are terrific and the paper airplanes would make a good hands-on activity. This site features art and cultural information of native Americans, focusing especially on the Eastern Woodlands region. There is information on , Birds & Feathers, Clay & Pottery, Leather & Clothes, Metalwork, Plants & Trees, Porcupine Quills, Stonework & Tools, and Weaving & Cordage. Some of the text passages may be a bit lengthy, but there are also interactive ways for students to get a "hands on" feel, such as with the beadwork interactive game. The sections under Special Features are certain to make the culture come alive for elementary and middle school students.

Give students a scavenger hunt to learn the basics about the culture you are studying, then allow them to try some of the interactive games, ass based on the content of the site. This extensive webquest on life in Medieval times includes all facets of life and provides multiple challenges to students to research, assimilate information, write, analyze and evaluate. The final group task (after multiple individual steps) is to analyze a problem from Medieval times and provide a suggested solution. The list of resources to use is extensive, and stduetns are also directed to infrmation about evaluating web-based srouces BEFORE they start the task. Although there is no actual Teacher Page, there is a listing of resources teachers might use and an invitaiton to submit further ideas via email.

Review the process carefully to see if you need to adapt it in your situation. The teacher who designed this uses clips from a film (Ever After) and specific software packages (Inspiration, Publisher). There are certainly alternate ways to accomplish the same tasks if you do not have access to these exact resources. If you do not have as much time, you may want to use some portion of this webquest with your students. It is well-packaged for use in toto, if you wish!One alternative would be having students turn in work via Google Docs, reviewed here, allowing for easy feedback from the teacher and no messy papers to grade.

BBC offers the news with vocabulary support, exercises, video and audio features with related testing, a serial story with viewer input, a special grammar and vocabulary section, and features just for students (Learner of the Day, a learning English blog, emailed newsletter, and message board.) This is a comprehensive site well worth your time. American speakers will find some "different" vocabulary, but this simply enriches the site.

This highly-participatory, attractive world news site for kids lets children select all the normal news features like tv/movies, music, weather, sports, animals, sci/tech etc. Students can join the Press Pack and submit their own photos and comments. Under Newsroom, kids have the options of submitting a report they've researched and written; it will be displayed on the website! They can also ask for a certain topic to be investigated. Topic suggestions can be found here too. Personal advice columns are totally cyber with one current topic, bullying, available in video webchat format. A message board with current comments runs across the top of the site like a ticker tape. Other interactive features include student voting and blogs.
In the Classroom
Note: the site is British, so spelling and topics have a UK slant! Make sure you have parent permission for students to post work to the site, and keep their identities safe by using pseudonyms or initials. Encourage those with Internet access to visit the site with mom and dad to talk about current events together (include the link on your teacher web page). History is a fabric woven of many events, and Dates That Matter helps students see the full tapestry. Each entry opens with a date and a single intriguing sentence about the event. A set of guiding questions then appears one at a time -- click Reveal to uncover each answer and surface the next question. When all questions have been explored, the full historical event is named, and a Why It Matters explanation fills in the remaining context and offers curated links to learn more. Teachers who work with struggling or reluctant readers may find these daily entries a natural way to practice the reading strategy of connecting new information to prior knowledge.
