Web Whiteboard is a free, collaborative, online whiteboard that doesn't require registration. All collaboration takes place in real-time; share the URL with collaborators. Just click the link to begin using the whiteboard tools; boards expire after 24 hours. Web Whiteboard also includes a direct link to create a whiteboard using Miro, reviewed here. Web Whiteboard tools include templates, sticky notes, text, and drawing options. When integrated with a Miro account, many other resources are available, including Google Drive, Adobe Express, and Unsplash images.

In the Classroom
Allow students to create collaborative drawings as responses to literature. They can map out the plot or themes, add labels, create character studies, and more. Share the finished products on an interactive whiteboard, projector, or your class website. Have a group of students create a drawing that another group can use as a writing prompt. Use Web Whiteboard as a brainstorming or sketching space for groups or the class to share ideas for a significant project or to solve a real-world problem. Use this site with students in a computer lab (or on laptops) to create a drawing of the story's setting as it is read aloud. As a creative assessment idea, have students draw out a simple cartoon with stick figures to explain a more complex process, such as how a democracy works. If you are lucky enough to teach in a BYOD setting, use Web Whiteboard to demonstrate and illustrate any concept while students use the chat and drawing tools to interact in real time. If you are studying weather, have students diagram the layers of the atmosphere and the processes that occur during a thunderstorm. Introduce this tool to students who are working on group projects. Alternatively, have students use this to work with partners or in small teams to complete complex math problems or equations. Give students a problem by typing it on their board. YiNote is a Chrome browser extension allowing users to take notes while watching online videos. After installing the extension, click the icon in your browser bar while viewing any video to bring up a box for adding notes. YiNote adds a time stamp to match the place in the video of saved notes. Return at anytime and click on your notes to go directly to that point in the video. One-click sharing allows the option to share notes via a direct URL or through links to social networking sites.

After installing the YiNote extension, add notes to any online video then share with students for viewing as part of your flipped classroom lessons. Use with videos that may be too long otherwise; have students go directly to relevant portions of videos and view with your guidance supplied in the note portion. Include a note for any video you ask students to watch, then have them share their answers in an online bulletin board creator, such as Padlet, reviewed here. This virtual exhibit illustrates a little-known chapter of Canadian history - the story of Canada and Jewish Holocaust refugees. Choose tabs to follow the story of the refugees from "We Had to Leave" through "New Lives." Each section includes detailed information about the refugees' stories including photos, videos, and additional readings. Also, each portion of the site includes lesson plans for classroom use. This site is available in English and French.There is an abundance of excellent material on this site, regrettably the videos use Flash. Nothing else does.

Take advantage of the free lesson plans included on this site as part of any World War II unit. Divide students into cooperative learning groups to explore the site. Have each group become "experts" about different sections then teach their portion to their classmates. Have students create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, or Venngage, reviewed here. Have students collaborate and create maps using MapHub, reviewed here With MapHub students can add icons, text, images, and locations of different points of refuge for those fleeing the Holocaust.

Instead of a one-time professional development session, consider creating an ongoing podcast using Buzzsprout, reviewed here to share new technology tools, provide advice and tips, and answer common questions. The ISTE YouTube channel provides a great starting point for learning and sharing tech tips with peers.

This site offers information about energy, including games and videos, for students and provides curriculum materials for teachers. Students can read and learn about the history of electricity, power safety tips, and learn about "green" power. Games include Power Bandit, a word search, crossword, and jigsaw puzzles. Beware of the Energy Vampire explains to students how to save energy, and which appliances use a lot of energy. There is a large inventory of videos showing different types of energy production plants, explaining power production through the use of coal and nuclear reactors, and the history of the TVA. Teachers, be sure to check out the teacher's section of the site which includes lesson plans and activities for elementary through high school. Engaging and colorful.

Find Streaming Videos from John Stossel to engage your students in discussions about interesting and thought-provoking issues. Each month this site posts a new video for your use, and all videos come with suggested discussion questions and quizzes. Also, you will find lots of discussion topics in the archived section titled with categories like the environment, celebrities, and consumer issues, just to name a few. Registration is free; you need to log in to view the teacher's guide and discussion questions! There are some items of interest on the top menu bar: Both Sides of the Issue, Features, Video Library, and Teacher Resources.

In the Classroom
Use these streaming videos to help create "background knowledge" for your students and improve listening and note taking skills. Small groups of students could rotate through stations with the video, or you can use it with the whole class. Either way, students can practice their two column (Cornell) note taking skills using the left column for keywords and/or questions and the right side of the paper for important information about the topic they are viewing. Have students discuss and look up answers to their questions. If using the videos as a whole class, you may want to use a discussion program that allows "backchanneling" such as Socrative, so everyone can comment on the issue(s) presented and see each other thoughts. Another idea is to use the videos as a jump-off point for research by small groups. There are many huge topics you can break into parts for small groups to investigate after watching Stossel's take on it. Then challenge the groups to create a multimedia presentation using one of many TeachersFirst Edge tools.

Upload a photo to the Color palette generator to view four selected colors that coordinate with the image. The generated colors include both the color name and the color code. If you are looking for ideas, try the Color palettes. Browse through the color palettes or explore by typing a theme, color, or keyword to find suggested palettes. Learn about color theory and color combinations by exploring the Color wheel. Take an in-depth look at colors in the Color Meaning portion of the site. Choose any color to learn more about the color space and conversions in different formats.

This interactive site is especially designed to give upper elementary students an introduction to ancient civilizations, World War 2, and the Victorian era. It contains interactives, artwork, printables and quizzes.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector and try the activities as a whole class. Or have small groups rotate to a whiteboard and manipulate the activities together. Put a link to the activities on your class website and let students use as a center. Use the quizzes as a pretest to see what students already know. When you have finished studying the unit have students retake the quiz to see how much they learned. Explore cutting-edge technology and video from the photo editors of Time with a daily blog from Lightbox. Time Lightbox features photos and videos of current events, behind the scenes, new exhibits, books, and technology. Take another critical view of current events with photos never released or ways never portrayed. This daily, behind the scenes look, lets you know what is happening on the front lines, through photojournalism with portraits, faces, and events that are changing our history. The images give you a mix into the artistic world of photojournalism with a closer look at our world.

In the Classroom
Lightbox offers applications into many subject areas in the classroom. In social studies, world histories, or current events look closer at the portrayal of current events. Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Analyze the viewpoint given by the media and compare to the behind the scenes look at Lightbox. What are the stories, experiences, and effects behind the news? How does history change the lives of people? Discover multiple viewpoints that might come to life from these riveting images. Follow current events and bring them to a personal level for students. In Art classes, dive into the art of photojournalism with composition, style, space, and elements of design. Bring to life a study of current photographers portraying messages in unique manners. In Language Arts class, determine characterization, story, or details discovered in each image. Challenge students to link to one of the photos, and then narrate the photo as if it were a news report using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. Create audio recordings AND choose a location (on a map) where the story takes place with Zeemaps, reviewed here. Use images as ready-made writing prompts for current events or writing classes. Develop multiple points of view into well-known events to share, debate, and discover how people are affected. Lightbox will make any blog become dazzling and poignant. Keep students active, reflective, and involved in current events in an intriguing, visual way. ELL/ESL learners will benefit from the extra information shown in each photograph. Challenge gifted learners to analyze and synthesize current events in ways that they have yet to discover! Remember that these images are copyrighted, so the best way to display them on a blog or other web project is as a LINKED image. COPY the direct image URL by RIGHT-clicking on the image itself and choosing "copy image location" on a Mac or "Properties" on a windows computer.
