Find radio stations from around the world to increase students' cross-cultural understanding. Choose a station from a country your students are researching and listen to compare and contrast the content with what they hear. Look for similarities or differences, including the type of music, the amount of advertising, and the language spoken. Use the Venn Diagram Creator by Canva, reviewed here to record what you find. Choose different stations to play quietly during work time, or let students choose a country of the week to play each day, selecting a different location each day. The Free Lessons page on Recess Reset offers educators no-cost access to the first units of the animated social-emotional learning curriculum. These short, engaging lessons include mindfulness and emotional regulation videos designed for use after transitions, such as recess, to help students calm and refocus. The free section provides the first three units of the larger curriculum in both English and Spanish, allowing teachers to implement several weeks of structured SEL instruction. Select the Free Lessons link at the top of the site to go to the signup page and access the three free units.

In the Classroom
Play one of the free animated videos immediately after recess or a high-energy transition. Students can practice the featured breathing or mindfulness strategy together to calm their bodies and refocus before returning to academic work. After students have viewed a lesson, gather them in a circle and practice the strategy again with teacher guidance. Ask students to share how their bodies feel before and after the reset to build self-awareness. Use the free lessons to introduce regulation strategies, then have students create simple strategy cards or drawings showing when to use each one. Strategy cards and drawings can be kept at desks or added to a calm-down area.

Have students role-play applying a Recess Reset strategy to build empathy and problem-solving skills. Older students can include sentence stems or reflection prompts to deepen ELA connections. Students can create a Reset journal using Book Creator, reviewed here or create a class Padlet, reviewed here.

The TTSReader Player is a free, web-based text-to-speech tool that lets users paste or load text, documents, or even webpages to be read aloud. One helpful feature is the option to switch to a free voice (non-premium). You can click on the voice selector, choose a free voice, and it will continue to work across different URLs without needing to be reset each time. When premium voices are selected, the site may prompt you to sign in with Google to unlock them, but the free voices remain usable without signing in.
