Students strengthen skills in process writing, creative thinking, inductive reasoning, and cooperative work by using detective fiction. After working together to solve a mysterious "murder" among the book stacks in the school library, students are introduced to a collection of children's detective novels representing a wide range of reading levels and cultural settings. While class lessons apply to any and all selections, each student is assigned a book that reflects his/her individual reading level.
In the Classroom
As a class, try to solve this literary mystery which involves a murder among the bookshelves in a library. While working on solving who did it, students will learn about a wide variety of intermediate detective novels. Have student pair or small groups of students pick whichever one is of the most interest and get it either online or make a trip to the school library to find the book. Have the pairs or small groups report out about their book to their peers after completion. Be sure they plan out their presentation by using a storyboard creator such as SuperNotecard. Students can then finalize their presentations using a tool like Make Beliefs Comix, or Powtoon. Pair weaker readers with a stronger one and have student pairs read the information Have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. Students could then copy over the plan they have for their own hero's journey in their blog. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or X (formerly Twitter) links. In honor of Nelson Mandela's 67 years of public service, challenge students to complete 67 minutes of acts of kindness. Students can help younger students, create thank-you cards for school staff, organize classroom materials, or participate in a community service project. Have students create an acrostic poem using the letters in "MANDELA" or design a poster highlighting Mandela's character traits and achievements. Encourage students to include quotes, illustrations, and examples from his life. Use the Mandela Day theme of service to plan a class project that benefits the school or community. Students can collect supplies for a local organization, create welcome kits, organize a recycling campaign, or develop a kindness initiative. Have students reflect on how their project connects to Mandela's belief that everyone has the power to create positive change.

In the Classroom
Allow students to create collaborative drawings as responses to literature. They can map out the plot or themes, add labels, create character studies, and more. Share the finished products on an interactive whiteboard, projector, or your class website. Have a group of students create a drawing that another group can use as a writing prompt. Use Web Whiteboard as a brainstorming or sketching space for groups or the class to share ideas for a significant project or to solve a real-world problem. Use this site with students in a computer lab (or on laptops) to create a drawing of the story's setting as it is read aloud. As a creative assessment idea, have students draw out a simple cartoon with stick figures to explain a more complex process, such as how a democracy works. If you are lucky enough to teach in a BYOD setting, use Web Whiteboard to demonstrate and illustrate any concept while students use the chat and drawing tools to interact in real time. If you are studying weather, have students diagram the layers of the atmosphere and the processes that occur during a thunderstorm. Introduce this tool to students who are working on group projects. Alternatively, have students use this to work with partners or in small teams to complete complex math problems or equations. Give students a problem by typing it on their board. After installing the extension, click the icon in your browser bar while viewing any video to bring up a box for adding notes. YiNote adds a time stamp to match the place in the video of saved notes. Return at anytime and click on your notes to go directly to that point in the video. One-click sharing allows the option to share notes via a direct URL or through links to social networking sites.

In the Classroom
Use images from Unsplash as creative writing prompts. Have students create a multimedia presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint Online, reviewed here, uploading the image they choose and narrating it. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate the photo as if it is a news report.
