Activities from 'Mini-lessons' to 'Sharing' (and all steps in-between) leading up to the crucial role of sharing student writing in group reading sessions are each discussed on this web page. Be sure to click "5 Editing Strategies That Actually Work For Student Writers." Once students understand how to edit someone elses work, their writing improves. This site would be an excellent motivating tool for students participating in writing and literature. Save the site as a learning center or station, and allow students both to peruse the stories and submit their own stories to be published. Stories are separated by genre, making it easier to tailor student's focus during a particular unit. During a poetry unit, instruct students to examine only the poetry and to submit their own. Students strengthen skills in process writing, creative thinking, inductive reasoning, and cooperative work by using detective fiction. After working together to solve a mysterious "murder" among the book stacks in the school library, students are introduced to a collection of children's detective novels representing a wide range of reading levels and cultural settings. While class lessons apply to any and all selections, each student is assigned a book that reflects his/her individual reading level.
In the Classroom
As a class, try to solve this literary mystery which involves a murder among the bookshelves in a library. While working on solving who did it, students will learn about a wide variety of intermediate detective novels. Have student pair or small groups of students pick whichever one is of the most interest and get it either online or make a trip to the school library to find the book. Have the pairs or small groups report out about their book to their peers after completion. Be sure they plan out their presentation by using a storyboard creator such as SuperNotecard. Students can then finalize their presentations using a tool like Make Beliefs Comix, or Powtoon. Pair weaker readers with a stronger one and have student pairs read the information Have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. Students could then copy over the plan they have for their own hero's journey in their blog. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or X (formerly Twitter) links. Explore ecosystems and environmental responsibility with this substantial, ready-to-use interdisciplinary curriculum unit designed for young learners. The Earth and Me: Forever Friends introduces landforms, soil, the water cycle, vegetation, climate, habitats, pollution, acid rain, recycling, and conservation while emphasizing how plants, animals, people, and natural resources depend on one another. The unit was developed for a kindergarten classroom and is recommended by the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute for grades K-3 in life, physical, and Earth science. Teachers will find six lesson plans, an additional lesson focused on the three R's, suggested activities, experiments, art projects, field experiences, eco-journal writing, and annotated bibliographies. The original unit is designed to extend over approximately four months, but individual investigations such as comparing soils, growing seedlings, exploring landforms, and sorting reusable and recyclable materials can also stand alone.

In honor of Nelson Mandela's 67 years of public service, challenge students to complete 67 minutes of acts of kindness. Students can help younger students, create thank-you cards for school staff, organize classroom materials, or participate in a community service project. Have students create an acrostic poem using the letters in "MANDELA" or design a poster highlighting Mandela's character traits and achievements. Encourage students to include quotes, illustrations, and examples from his life. Use the Mandela Day theme of service to plan a class project that benefits the school or community. Curriculum Genie is an AI tool that helps educators plan lessons and teaching units in just a few minutes. After creating an account, fill in the form to create a unit or lesson plan. Use the included examples as a guide for completing items such as the unit description, correlation to standards, and the unit length. After completing the form, choose Generate to view and edit the unit's foundation. Continue following each step to build a weekly theme and overview, along with lesson plans and details. When finished, export your unit or lesson as a PDF, Word Document, or Google Doc. Free plans let users create unlimited lessons and start with 4 unit plans, with the option to earn additional credits. Subscriptions are not required when using the free plan. If your district blocks YouTube, then the video may not be viewable.

Utilize the AI features built into Curriculum Genie to plan or adapt your existing lessons or units.
