It covers: choosing a subject, organizing, revising, editing, documenting sources, informal essays, thesis/support essays, argumentative essays, and exploratory essays. Rolling the cursor over each different subject will show what it includes.

In the Classroom
This site gives activities and suggestions about how to involve kids in what they write. The wide range of grade levels addressed is also attractive, although it is geared more for high school students. Have student use the Explore tab to find links for coming up with new ideas to write about. Don't forget to look at "The Journalists' Questions" in the middle of the page.There is a memberhsip option. If you allow students to join, you should first get parent permission. Members are able to create journals and participate in collaboration, but you should have firm Internet Safety policies in place, if you decide to use these in class.

This is a terrific site that allows as much use or as little as you want: instructions for students, addenda instructions for the teacher, wide-ranging topics, or single skills. It also offers some good refreshers for teachers who have not taught writing in awhile or are looking for new ways to approach it, particularly using technology. The Kennedy Center's "Creating Fictional Characters" lesson is a flexible, multi-day writing and drama resource designed to help students explore how authors create believable and memorable characters. Across approximately four 45-minute lessons, students analyze characterization techniques, examine the importance of both major and minor characters, and explore how images, literary allusions, and historical context can deepen character development. Students participate in the creative process by designing original characters, writing short scripts, and performing scenes that bring their characters to life. The lesson also strengthens inferencing, collaboration, contextual analysis, oral communication, research, and writing skills while encouraging students to understand how texts reflect the attitudes, values, fashions, and social norms of a time period. To extend learning, students apply characterization techniques through engaging quick writes that reinforce their understanding of direct and indirect characterization.

By registering with an email address, you and your students are able to create their own newspaper with a choice of three options, a simple page layout, one with frames, or one with two windows which requires Java Script. Creators can also add images and/or links to images and other info. After selecting either "standard" (displays newspaper sections one at a time) or "quick paper" (shows all sections and selects the most popular items for the final paper), students can click to read their personalized news. Options allow students to hear the news also, using RealAudio. They can select news from local, national, or international papers. Instructions on the site are excellent and preparing the personalized newspaper just takes a few moments. Participants receive a link to their newspapers in an email message sent only to them. remember that the audio requires Real Player. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

As a teaching tool, you can upload picture collections and "tag" them with a unique keyword so students can access them for various activities, such as creating sequenced "comic strips," making annotated posters, including photos in blogs, and other electronic projects. This is a great way to make the photos accessible to students. Note: Use the DIRECT URL to the specifically-tagged photos ("photosynthesisproject") or create a collection for each project.

Create a free account and take a moment during setup to adjust your notification settings so you only receive the emails you want. Upload and organize photos for the projects you plan to use with students so they are easy to access year after year. You can manage privacy settings at any time, making images public when needed and switching them to private when they are no longer in use. Be sure that you are the copyright holder of any images you upload by using original photos you have taken rather than images from the internet. To use the site effectively, you will need basic skills such as taking and saving digital photos, locating and uploading files, tagging images for easy student access, copying and sharing URLs for collections, and adjusting privacy and sharing settings. A delightfully creative, collaborative site where people share (and comment on) directions for "how to" make just about anything. Language Arts, Art, or Gifted classes can "explore" the various topics to see how step-by-step directions are written, then have students write their own sequence of instructions. Even add a digital picture. Topics are "filtered" by topic (on the left side of the "explore" page) and also searchable by keyword. Art teachers will appreciate illustrated explanations of techniques from artists all over the world. This is a collaborative site, so you can read comments made by others on the different sets of instructions. Always preview such a site for appropriate content. Some include Acrobat files of patterns.

This site enables students to correctly cite sources in a Works Cited page in both MLA and APA style. The student provides the information (such as title, authors publisher, etc.) and the software will show what the entry ought to look like. This is a helpful tool when writing a paper or properly documenting sources fro a student-made PowerPoint show. The directions are in small type in the main column of information. The basic idea is to select the type of style (MLA, Chicago, etc) you want at the left, enter information, and generate the citation.

Be careful that all entries look as you instructed students to do them. the only caution with this site is that there are sponsored sites on the right-hand side that students can click on to buy term papers. Students can use the site's search feature to zero in on an era in American history, a specific author, or a book title. The site features many video clips from the companion C-SPAN series. A high-speed connection is a must.

You can pick and choose not only which author you want, but what information you want to use. You can choose short video clips shown on a projector either as a lesson in themselves (using the suggested questions or ones of your own); you can create a webquest using a combination of both this site and other sites linked from it; or you can use this as a straightforward internet lesson, using the material presented on the site itself. The National Park Service's overview of Seattle's Klondike Gold Rush Visitor Center contains links to some extremely comprehensive educational materials. Included is a integrated curriculum design for grades 3-6 consisting of 19 lessons blending history, language arts (writing and journaling), and geography. One of the lessons requires the use of the PBS film "Gold!" and one of the lessons involves a field trip to the Visitor Center. There are links to PDF versions of lesson documents, many hands-on project overviews, and comprehensive materials lists. The lessons would be easily adapted to students in higher grade levels.
