Little Language Lessons is an experiment from Google Labs providing bite-sized language lessons in fifteen languages, teaching vocabulary, phrases, slang, and more in your chosen language. Begin by choosing from one of the three categories: Tiny Lesson, Slang Hang, and Word Cam. Tiny Lesson helps users learn vocabulary, phrases, and grammar tips; Slang Hang provides expressions and regional slang; and Word Cam uses your photos to help users learn from their surroundings. After selecting a language, each activity provides input options; you can view the results as text or listen to the audio response. Because this is an experimental site, it's best to double-check the accuracy of the results.

In the Classroom

In language classes, ask students to type in a scenario, such as ordering at a cafe, asking for directions, or reporting a lost passport, to get instant results in using the language in real-world situations. Integrate Little Language Lessons into a social studies unit and have students add common phrases and information from different countries or cultures. After learning common phrases or identifying items in their chosen language, ask students to use Canva for Education, reviewed here or Google Slides, reviewed here to make a postcard in that language as if they are writing home to tell about their visit to a foreign country. Use Padlet, reviewed here to create a gallery walk sharing students' postcards.

Use the performance assessment guidance to design a short project, such as students planning a pretend cultural exchange trip. They can use target-language reading, writing, listening, and speaking tasks to demonstrate proficiency across modes. Apply one of Grahn for Lang's differentiation ideas to an existing activity, such as offering students three task choices at different levels of challenge (e.g., matching vocabulary, writing simple sentences, or creating a dialogue). Choose a real-world resource (such as a menu, infographic, or short video) from the site's examples. Have students identify key vocabulary or phrases, then share with a partner how they could use them in real-life situations.
