This website is truly a rare find - combining math and reading skills. Although the main page is aesthetically plain, the activities are very challenging. Most are set up as word problems that require reading, comprehension, and math skills. The "outline math problems" provide students with 3-5 choices. You click the blank, and the answer choices are provided. There are activities for primary grades (such as basic addition practice) as well as advanced activities for secondary grades (such as geometry concepts). Many of the activities require JAVA. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page..

tag(s): angles (51), logic (163), multiples (15)

In the Classroom

These activities are perfect for an interactive whiteboard (or projector). You could also provide a link to this website in your class newsletter or on your class web page. Many of the activities would provide excellent at-home practice and/or enrichment. Challenge your students to answer a question of the week for extra credit.

This website, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, provides an enormous collection of "web lessons" (interactives) for all grade levels. There are lessons in language arts, math, science, social studies, and health. There are too many lesson plans to count - and all are projector, laptop, or whiteboard-ready. Just to give you an idea of some of these unique lessons, some of the titles include "Where is Japan?", "Walrus World", "Piece of Pie", "Medians", "Fence Me In", and "Critter Craze". On the main page, a brief description is provided for each lesson plan. Click Teacher Solutions > Lesson Plans to search by subject or grade level.

tag(s): charts and graphs (194), evolution (88), expository writing (31), industrial revolution (22), native americans (131), primary sources (125), probability (129), symmetry (32), writing (309)

In the Classroom

If you want ready-to-go lessons guaranteed to work well on your interactive whiteboard, this collection is a winner. You simply open the activity on the whiteboard and have students tap and drag their way through as you talk with the class. (Invite your most "active" student to be "Vanna White" for a great behavior management solution). Many lessons would work well on laptops or on a computer cluster center, as well.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids is a fantastic interactive online math dictionary for students which explains over 600 common mathematical terms and math words in simple language. Enter the site using the link on the home page and choose (or browse) math terms. Math terms come to life with a click of the mouse! Virtually all terms have an animated or interactive component - for example, choose quadrilateral to view a definition along with an image of a quadrilateral, the next button changes the quadrilateral to a square along with the new definition, choose next again to see the square change to a rhombus, and so on. Virtually all standard math terms are included so users are likely to find anything they want along with some new terms! A link is included at the bottom of each section to print each definition easily.

Another wonderful portion of the site is a new section titled Math Charts. Search this portion by choosing from areas such as numbers, operations, decimals, or much more then choose one of the sub-topics. Each chart includes a visual description of the topic and is specifically created to be printed for classroom use, choose the print button at the bottom of the page and the content will enlarge to fill the most it can in whatever size paper is chosen. Be sure not to miss the blackline masters located at the bottom of this section that contain many printables for classroom use such as fraction strips, hundreds charts, and much more.

tag(s): addition (137), charts and graphs (194), data (212), decimals (94), division (109), fractions (179), measurement (126), money (113), multiplication (133), order of operations (32), percent (63), ratios (52), subtraction (118), time (94)

In the Classroom

The math charts are a wonderful resource for classroom bulletin boards, wall decorations, and more - simply laminate for increased durability. Print onto standard sized paper for use in math notebooks or journals. Create a scavenger hunt for students to perform to find words in the math dictionary, have students write definitions and illustrations in math notebooks. View the site using your interactive whiteboard when discussing, introducing, or reviewing math concepts. Share this site through your classroom website or newsletter for reference at home. Share with ESL/ELL and Special Education teachers as a resource to use with students.

This fabulous collection of lesson plans, activities, and web links from NCTM is a professional treasury for math teachers. The two menu selections at the top, Lessons and Interactives, are actually drop down menus to find lessons by grade levels, Brain Teasers, Mobile Apps, a Web Sketchpad, and more. The interactives are a challenging practice for concepts ranging from basic fractions and graphing to congruence theorems. Narrow your search with keywords. Each activity includes a description and grade level recommendation. Highlighted activities and Lessons on the home page change often. Many lesson plans also include technology links, but others are low-tech or no-tech. Illuminations is created by NCTM.

Keep this one in your professional favorites to find supporting technology for any math concept. As you find practice or extension ideas for student use or at home reinforcement, share specific links on your class web page or classroom computer center for students to access independently or as you assign them for needed practice. The full site is overwhelming for most parents, so share the specific areas that fit your curriculum.
