In the Classroom

Take some time to poke around to find the gem that will spice up your art classroom. This is a great site to use in the elementary classroom, and in art electives classes in middle grades and high school. Be sure to share it with other teachers on your campus and put a link to this tool on your class website for students to use at home. Enhance learning by using a visual blogging tool such as Telegra.ph, reviewed here. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. Save the URL for your blog! This blog creator requires no registration. The students can blog about their work and even create an online portfolio. Host an art show at your school for families and the communities to showcase the students' creativity. Your students can describe their work as visitors explore the gallery. In a language arts class have students brainstorm to analyze the character(s), setting, and situation of a painting and create an original story. Explore this site before a trip to an art museum.

In the Classroom

The third topic is 75 (80) Christmas Crafts for Kids. On an interactive whiteboard or with a projector use Padlet, reviewed here to choose several of the crafts you and your students think they might enjoy making. Even before having students choose the craft they want to work on, start gathering materials; the materials don't have to be for the craft they are making, but create a "general materials" box, or area in your classroom. Many of the ideas use inexpensive or free materials! For those that don't, think creatively (use paper plates instead of real plates). You and your students may want to plan on walking around the school, they can walk through their neighborhoods to find twigs and such. Perhaps some of the families have old yarn they can donate. Allow individuals and small groups to choose the craft they would like to make.

Photography can be both an art form and a form of scientific inquiry. Photos of People and Cultures can promote human understanding better than any written words. This site from National Geographic can serve both ends if used properly. Art teachers "focus" on tips and techniques and photography advice areas, while science/social studies teachers will easily locate a wide range of plant, animal, culture, and geography images. As always, the photos themselves are exquisite. You will need to sign up for the free newsletter (with email) to view the photos.

Share a photo of the day as an activator at the start of a lesson on your projector or interactive whiteboard (IWB). Allow a student of the day to select his/her photo of the day as a class inspiration. Share a photo as a visual writing prompt. Use tools on your IWB to discover and reveal design elements in the photos in art class. Use selected collections on laptops with student partners (galleries) to provide a visual experience of a location or culture you are studying, engage students and enhance learning by asking students to use Padlet, to record their observations for visual evidence of some of the major concepts you have discussed in class.
