The third topic is 75 (80) Christmas Crafts for Kids. On an interactive whiteboard or with a projector, use Padlet to choose several of the crafts you and your students think they might enjoy making. Even before having students choose the craft they want to work on, start gathering materials. The materials don't have to be for the craft they are making; create a "general materials" box or area in your classroom. Many of the ideas use inexpensive or free materials! For those who don't, think creatively (use paper plates instead of real plates). You and your students may want to plan on walking around the school, and they can walk through their neighborhoods to find twigs and such. Perhaps some of the families have old yarn they can donate. Bring a familiar Aesop fable to life while combining reading, art, math, science, and problem-solving. In this ready-to-use lesson, students listen to or read "The Crow and the Pitcher," discuss the story's meaning and moral, create an original crow puppet, and investigate the crow's solution by predicting and testing how many pebbles are needed to raise the water level. The combination of storytelling, puppet-making, measurement, prediction, and hands-on experimentation gives students several ways to explore how persistence and creative thinking can solve a problem. TeachersFirst's existing listing describes the resource as an interdisciplinary lesson in which students interpret the fable, design a puppet, and make and test predictions about how many pebbles Crow needs to reach the water.
In the Classroom
Have students work in pairs to retell "The Crow and the Pitcher" with their handmade puppets, then challenge each pair to explain how the crow's actions reveal the story's moral. This site from National Geographic can serve both ends if used properly. Art teachers "focus" on tips and techniques and photography advice areas, while science/social studies teachers will easily locate a wide range of plant, animal, culture, and geography images.
