Discover the many works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti - painter, designer, writer, and translator. On the menu at the top, click exhibits and objects to find a varied list that categorizes Rossett's works: Double Works, Pictures, Poems, Prose, Translations, Books, Manuscripts, Correspondence, and Material Design. Scroll down the page to find biographical information about this man, who some say was the most important and original artistic force in the second half of the nineteenth century in Great Britain.

In the Classroom

Introduce the exhibits and objects page using a projector or an interactive whiteboard, and have students partner read the biographical information about Rossett. Have students take notes using Webnote, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Next, show students how to navigate the exhibits and objects page. Ask partners or small groups to choose one topic from the list of Pictures, Poems, etc. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore independently while continuing to take online notes. Take this a step further and allow pairs or small groups of students to share what they learned with their peers using an interactive infographic like Canva, reviewed here.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on Renaissance art in Europe. There is art that encompasses other time periods, but a good majority of it is from the Renaissance era. Allow students to peruse the site in cooperative learning groups, with the intentions of presenting their own summary of what they read on the site. Have students use a mapping tool such as Zeemap to create a map of local landforms (with audio stories and pictures included)!

Ask students to document their learning stages by taking photos of their art and editing them, and then making a collage with Photo Joiner Collage Maker, reviewed here. Encourage older students to keep their work in a portfolio for future use with Pathbrite, reviewed here.

In the Classroom

Use the images on this site to create a visual discovery activity in your classroom, introducing the topic of prehistoric cave drawings. Select 3-5 images from this site, choosing the most powerful and moving images. Placing the images on individual slides, allow students 1-2 minutes to observe each image. During that time period, students should be taking notes based on what they observe, predict and infer about each image. The more powerful and detailed the image is, the more information students can take out. After the class has observed all the chosen images, have a class discussion based on the notes students took. This is a great way to introduce content in a way that gets students thinking, as well as avoiding the typical lecture format.
