This impressive collection of magazine cover art represents some of the world's most compelling personalities and some of Time's most memorable art work. You'll find portraits of queens, presidents, popes, athletes, and entertainers - the famous as well as the infamous. Each portrait is accompanied by brief biographical information and sound clips.

In the Classroom

This site would be useful in a Art History or US government class studying the impact of the media on politics. Have students explore the site on the interactive whiteboard, allowing them to be hands on with the material - avoid being the Vanna White of the board! As students are navigating the site, focus their attention on how many presidents and political figures are featured - as evidenced on the link entitled "Most Featured Person." This could lead into a great discussion of how exposure can affect politicians, as well as the difference between good and bad press.

The Library of Congress features more than 70 color photographs - taken between 1939 and 1943 - that vividly capture the effects of the Great Depression on rural and small-town America and highlights the economic growth that preceded World War II. This is great visual resource for a 20th century American history class. Photography students can use the site to examine how the "Kodachrome" era changed the way we view our collective past.

tag(s): 1930s (40), 1940s (68), 20th century (168), great depression (31), images (256), photography (129)

In the Classroom

It's interesting how viewing the images in color makes the viewer feel as though the Great Depression was something far more recent - perhaps due to the dated feeling of black and white images. In a discussion of the Great Depression, spend some time comparing these images and the traditional black and white images on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Ask students about the differences and if one is more revealing or not. This can also lead into a discussion on the reliability of primary sources and the effects of seeing something rather than reading it.

Using art, music, and literary classics, students explore the idea of "monsters" in society, analyze how they are portrayed, the purpose they serve, and why they are necessary. After an introductory brainstorming activity, students read Beowulf and Grendel, watch and listen to snatches of monster-inspired music (Night on Bald Mountain, Jaws, and others), then apply research skills to design and present their own conceptual monster. Includes an assessment rubric, links to multimedia resources, and extension activities.

This page developed by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam offers some breathtaking features that will bring the artist's work to life for your students. Click on the "Van Gogh & Gauguin" link for a beautifully designed multimedia presentation that goes far beyond background information to reveal the very soul of the artist. Another must-see is the virtual 3D tour of the permanent museum collection. It requires the download of a Windows plug-in (directions are provided), but it is well worth it to walk through the rooms, learn about the paintings, and interact with other visitors (a feature that must be monitored closely if used in the classroom).

This online gallery contains a staggering number of works of art - more than 10,000 - organized by artist, country, movement, and name. Biographical information on each artist is provided. Of special note is a "World Literature in Painting" link that thematically connects art with classic literary works.

In the Classroom

Use the "World Literature in Painting," to find images to accompany your study of a piece of literature. The images hosted here are small, but the descriptions are descriptive and provide some excellent background on the art and literature. Find larger copies of the image elsewhere, and use them over the interactive whiteboard or projector to introduce interpretations of a piece of writing. Bare minimum, this would be a great way to show the impact the writing had on the culture.

To engage learners, ask them to select visuals that represent key events or scientific processes, then describe the significance of each selection. Enhance learning by asking students to import their selected clipart into Canva for Education, reviewed here to design professional-looking infographics or posters that explain their findings. After completing their visual designs, extend the learning by having students post their final products to a shared Padlet, reviewed here wall, which allows the class to participate in a digital gallery walk where they can leave feedback or ask questions about their peers' work, fostering a collaborative and reflective learning environment.
