In the Classroom
Before introducing students to Cassatt's paintings, briefly go over the Themes of Impressionism page on the site Impressionism, reviewed here, using an interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Have students pay particular attention to the third paragraph about how Impressionism differs from previous works of art. Ask them what makes Cassatt's paintings Impressionistic. After students have viewed several of Cassatt's paintings, ask them what the themes of her paintings might be (women and children). Create a class Padlet, reviewed here, and enhance student learning by asking small groups to research Mary Cassatt and decide on the five most interesting facts about her life. Use tools on your IWB to discover and reveal design elements in the photos in art class.
