There are examples galore, along with information on terminology, reading folding instructions, and sources for origami patterns. Use this site as an supplement to the book "One Thousand Paper Cranes." After the students have completed the book, use some class time to allow students to create their own cranes in class. Introduce the site on the interactive whiteboard before allowing students to explore it further in cooperative learning groups. Once students have created a crane, encourage them to try more complicated shapes and figures! This is a great way to lead into a conversation on the significance of origami and why it was so important in the book.

This site displays a number of collections of children's artwork, much of it created in response to specific projects or sites operated by third parties. It's a good general resource for examples of artwork from young people of all ages. It would also be a great source to see how children have reacted to learning about specific topics such as world hunger and the holocaust.

On the top menu, click Art + Artists to find a Collection of works by women artists, search by artist or artwork, time periods, medium, and or topic. The rest of this page displays 225 artworks that, when clicked, give you information about the artwork and the artist. When you click Artists, you'll find photos and profiles of women artists. Search by time periods and or medium. This page displays photos of the artists, and there is an interactive button at the top where you can shuffle which artists are displayed. Teachers: From the top menu, you can also click Learn and then For Educators to find Art, Books, and Creativity (ABC) curriculum that uses artists' books to highlight natural connections between visual arts and language arts. Scroll down the page to find additional resources.

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard (or projector). Take advantage of the free art lessons then allow students to explore on their own or in collaborative groups. Since many of the lessons include writing, enhance learning by having students create online posters individually or together as a class. Use a tool such as Web Poster Wizard, reviewed here, or PicLits, reviewed here, to display a photo of the artwork or artist and explain what they learned. Then use the poster makers once again as a final project for the students "on their own" exploration.

This Japanese site offers a collection of classical Japanese artwork, suitable for study as part of an exposure to Japanese history. The interface isn't the greatest, and the images contain watermarks, but the site works fine as an example of the unique nature of Japanese artistic representations.

tag(s): japan (56)

In the Classroom

Use these images in a picture walk around the classroom to introduce or review a unit on some aspect of Japanese culture. Select 10-15 images to be hung around the classroom, with students rotating between them every 30-60 seconds. Have students fill out quickly what they observe and infer about each image, with the intentions of connecting each image to an essential understanding about Japanese culture. For help creating easy and quick graphic organizers for the activity, we recommend a site such as Graphic Organizer Maker, (reviewed here).

Use the images and videos in the exhibit for a visual discovery activity. Select 3-4 images, placing them on a slide-show presentation. Have students take notes on each of the images and videos, noting what they observe, infer and predict about each one. After the presentation, have a class discussion based around student notes. This would be great review activity before an assessment, allowing students to apply the knowledge just learned. This would be a great resource for a world history classroom.

Discover the many works of Dante Gabriel Rossett - painter, designer, writer, and translator. On the menu at the top click exhibits and objects to find a varied list that categorizes Rossett's works: Double Works, Pictures, Poems, Prose, Translations, Books, Manuscripts, Correspondence, and Material Design. Scroll down the page to find biographical information about this man who some say was the most important and original artistic force in the second half of the nineteenth century in Great Britain.

tag(s): art history (89)

In the Classroom

Introduce the exhibits and objects page with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard and have the students partner read the biographical information about Rossett. Have students take notes using Webnote, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Next show students how to navigate the exhibits and objects page. Ask partners or small groups to choose one topic from the list of Pictures, Poems, etc. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own, continuing to take online notes. Take this a step further and allow pairs or small groups of students to share what they learned with their peers using an interactive infographic like Canva, reviewed here. Students can keep their work for future reference in a digital portfolio such as DIY, reviewed here.

Did you know that one if every five buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright has been destroyed? This site is sponsored by the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, which is dedicated to preserving the buildings he designed. There is a comprehensive gallery of images of his buildings, which take time to download, as well as ideas for how to take action to save the buildings that remain. While this site is commercial, it is a great way to get students involved in action projects.

"Truth Against the World" is just one of many quotes by one of this century's leading architects. In this site, you'll find Wright's words on life, architecture, cities, television, God and nature, and even a quote on Marilyn Monroe. Any one of these quotes could be used as a springboard for expository theme writing. This site has been archived but still works.

tag(s): architecture (65)

In the Classroom

Make a shortcut to this page of quotes from Wright on classroom computers or include it on your class web page for students to use as a resource for projects. Have students include a quote when turning in work, and explain how it inspired or helped them. Add music or art to explain a quote. During the first week of the school year, share this site with students. Challenge students to choose a personal "quote of the year" to set the tone for their goals. Have students put the quote in their notebook, folder, or on their device desktop. Choose a few quotes to hang around your classroom. Show students how to keep favorite quotes in an idea bin where they keep thoughts, thoughtful questions, and pieces of inspiration. Here are two tools you might like for an idea bin for middle or high school students: Thoughtboxes, reviewed here, and The Sketchbook Project, reviewed here. An idea bin collector for primary and elementary students could be Padlet, reviewed here.

This site offers fairly technical interpretations of how the mind interprets perspective, shadow, and other three-dimensional effects in two dimensional artwork. This site documents a Diego Rivera mural, Pan-American Unity, created in San Francisco in 1940 for an exposition there. The site includes both overviews of the mural panels as well as a video showing highly detailed segments of the artwork. An interesting presentation of this resource.

tag(s): painting (53)

In the Classroom

Read about the different panels in partners or small groups, or at a classroom computer center for students to access independently. Then consider having students watch the silent 15-minute video either at home or at the computer center as a small group, in partners, or independently. Have them write down questions about the part or parts they would like to know more about. This video isn't download-able or a YouTube or Vimeo, so the best way for students to identify the part(s) they're interested in would be to have them describe the part they want to know more about using a journaling tool like Penzu. With Penzu they can add their own artwork as illustrations. Instead of journaling, students could use a tool such as Screen-cast-o-matic, to capture the image on their screen and annotate it either in text or verbally.
