In the Classroom
After selecting and completing some of the lessons and activities found in "Learning From the Fossil Record," challenge students to choose one for themselves to extend their learning. Ask them to either post blog notes or create a concept map to organize and share their learning and understanding using using tools like Telegra.ph, reviewed here. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or X (formerly Twitter) links. This blog creator requires no registration. Alternatively, you could use an interactive concept map like MindMup, reviewed here. If you'd like to take this a step further ask students to create and interactive poster using Genially, reviewed here, to share their learning with their peers. With Genially students can insert maps, surveys, video, audio and more. Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on a projector. Explain the principles that lay behind endangered species, give a brief tutorial on using the website, and then divide students into small cooperative learning groups. Have each group pick a section on the website, such as "causes," "why help," etc. Have each student review and research their section, with the intentions of providing a brief presentation of their findings to their peers. The site provides a good example of the classifications, and can be easily searched for specific species if students are doing a research project. Forewarning: the classifications are all the Latin names of the reptiles, so it is best to know the creature you're searching for beforehand.
