How Do Native People and Nations Experience Belonging? is a six-part lesson series for students in grades 9-12 that explores the importance of homelands, kinship, and nationhood to Native Peoples of the Northern Plains. Through perspectives from Native community members, photographs, objects, and other primary and secondary sources, students examine how connections to land, family, community, and tribal nations shape identity and belonging. Lessons focus on belonging to the land, Native kinship systems, the rights and responsibilities of tribal citizenship, connections to Native histories and traditions, and the InterTribal Buffalo Council's work. Each lesson includes teacher and student instructions, supporting resources, and connections to the Common Core State Standards for ELA and the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies.
